SUMMARY:Pieta Brown
DESCRIPTION:Boundary-pushing\, singer-songwriter Pieta Brown makes her debut on the Sacred Heart altar stage with her band The Taken – featuring guitar player Erik Koskinen Friday\, April 26. \nThe daughter of two preacher’s kids\, Pieta was brought up in rural Iowa where she was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father\, beloved folk singer Greg Brown. Later\, while living with her mother in Alabama\, Pieta expanded these influences and began writing poems and composing instrumental songs on piano. \nIn her early 20’s\, after experiencing what she describes as “the songs calling\,” Pieta started experimenting with the banjo and eventually picked up a 1930’s Maybell arch-top guitar and never looked back. Emerging from a disjointed and distinctly ‘bohemian’ upbringing\, Pieta began performing live and making independent recordings. “I grew up around a lot of musicians and artists living on the fringe\, and have always felt most at home among them\,” Pieta says. \nPieta has toured with Mark Knopfler\, John Prine\, Amos Lee\, Brandi Carlisle\, JJ Cale\, Ani Difranco\, Mavis Staples\, and Calexico among others. She released her most recent album Freeway in September 2019 on Righteous Babe. \nDuluth-based singer-songwriter Colleen “Boss Mama” Myhre will open. \nBuy Tickets\nAdvance E-tickets are available for $20 on Eventbrite.com HERE. Paper tickets will be available at Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth and Globe News in Superior. Tickets will be available at the door while supply lasts for $25. Doors open at 6:30. Music at 7:30.

SUMMARY:Chastity Brown
DESCRIPTION:As the daughter of a blues musician\, Chastity Brown was born with an innate ability to channel complex circumstances into beautiful\, uplifting songs. But after surviving the isolation of the early pandemic and witnessing the global racial reckoning that manifested itself in the riots mere blocks from her South Minneapolis home\, even she is surprised to hear the way her new album Sing To The Walls turned out. \n“It’s a love album\, in a way I didn’t plan on\,” Chastity says. \nLike so many artists who endured the uncertainty of the 2020 lockdown\, Chastity’s instinct was to turn inward\, at first out of self-preservation\, and then because the new songs kept coming and coming. Since finishing her last album\, 2017’s Silhouette Of Sirens\, she estimates she’s written nearly 100 new songs\, 10 of which found their way onto Sing To The Walls. \nDon’t miss Chastity Brown performing songs from her new record and all her old favorites on the beautiful Sacred Heart altar stage. \nDuluth singer-songwriter Nolen Sellwood will open. SUMMARY:Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold Songwriter Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Presenting some of the finest northland music makers\, Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold will host their 3rd Annual Songwriter Showcase at 7 pm Saturday\, March 23 on the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage. \nThis one-time-only event features three singer-songwriters performing a solo set of their original music for a live audience\, discussing the craft of songwriting\, and sharing stories that inspire their music. Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold will conclude the night with a full band performance. \n2024 featured artists are: Shane Nelson\, Hannah Rey and Skarlett Woods. \nFrank said the inspiration for this event emerged in part by reflecting on his own journey as a singer songwriter\, and in part through his admiration of the multitude of gifted songwriters and performers in the Twin Ports area. \n“Songwriting lives at the heart of all music\, regardless of genre or instrumentation. It is a process of self-reflection and storytelling mixed with creative melodic expression\,” said Frank. “I have always been amazed at the sheer number of musicians in the Duluth area who write and perform their own original music. Many of these people are my dear friends\, and comprise a beautiful\, passionate\, and supportive community. My vision for this event is to showcase a small fraction of that talent by highlighting some singer-songwriters who are pillars of this community\, and who have inspired my own craft.” \nBuy Tickets\nAdvance E-Tickets are available for $15 on Eventbrite.com HERE. SUMMARY:Turn Turn Turn
DESCRIPTION:Turn Turn Turn is a trio who bonded over their mutual love of close harmony 60s and 70s country\, folk\, and pop music and formed an original Americana band. To create their distinctive sound\, the band “turns” to the distant past of early American recorded music\, “turns” again to that renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s\, and finally “turns” again to the present looking forward. \nMembers Adam Levy (guitar\, vocals)\, Savannah Smith (guitar\, vocals) and Barb Brynstad (bass\, vocals) are all mainstays of the Minnesota music scene and together craft an infectious\, pop-infused Americana. \nEven though Turn Turn Turn was born as a cover band\, the group’s original material – sweetheart alt-country folk-pop – quickly stole the spotlight. \nDuluth sister duo The Penny Peaches will open. \nThis concert is rescheduled from October. \nBuy Tickets\nAdvance e-tickets are available HERE for $20. Advance paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while supplies last. SUMMARY:Mason Jennings "Underneath the Roses" album release show
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota troubadour Mason Jennings celebrates the release of his 16th studio album Underneath the Roses with an altar stage performance at 8pm on Saturday Nov. 25 at Sacred Heart Music Center. \nJennings writes that the songs from Underneath The Roses were written in a burst following the birth of his son\, Western\, in March 2022. \n“I hadn’t written any songs in about a year. I had been dealing with the psychological after effects of the pandemic as well as the loss of my dad. So\, when Western was born I didn’t expect to be writing much. But immediately he was responding to music in a very intense way.” \n Between May and November 2022\, Jennings wrote 48 songs! \n“They certainly uplifted me and connected me with the creative spirit\, and spirit in general\, again. They cover all kinds of ground but\, when I listen back\, I think the central theme is overcoming fear with love\,” he said. \nStone Gossard (Pearl Jam) and Regan Hagar (Brad) from Loosegroove Records helped edit the track list down to 11 and put the songs to tape. \n“I called it Underneath The Roses because I feel like these songs are musical roses and when I look below them there are many thorns and so much dirt and soil. All of it was needed for them to come into existence and bloom\,” said Mason. \nMinnesota-based singer-songwriter Molly Dean will open. \nAdvance E-Tickets are available now for $20 on Eventbrite.com HERE.  Advance paper tickets will also be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while they last. \n

SUMMARY:Mr. Sun
DESCRIPTION:Mr Sun comprises some of the most original musicians to apply themselves to the American String Band. \nLegendary fiddler Darol Anger is at home in a number of musical genres\, some of which he helped to invent\, and is a member of the original “nuclear” generation of pickers who extended Bluegrass\, Jazz\, and Classical music to find their common ground; Mr Sun is the latest iteration in that legacy. \nDuluth native Joe K. Walsh is one of the foremost contemporary mandolinists\, with four award-winning years in the Gibson Brothers\, three solo recordings\, and a Berklee professorship. \nGrant Gordy is a standout in the crowded field of Acoustic Guitar Wunderkinds. Grant’s work was quickly recognized for its kaleidoscopic excellence and startling emotion\, fusing Jazz\, R&B\, and Bluegrass concepts to an unprecedented degree. \nThe group recently added the masterful bassist Aidan O’Donnell\, a Brooklyn\, New York (by way of Scotland) jazz veteran. \nThe four musical personalities of Mr Sun are so strong that one might imagine the group could explode if not for the palpable love and humor that emanate from every note they play together. The group means to take a relaxed approach to writing its own chapter in the American Music Saga with their new Compass Records release “extrovert”\, on CD & bright yellow vinyl. \nAdvance e-tickets are available HERE for $20. Advance paper tickets are available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while supplies last. Doors at 6 pm. Music at 7.

SUMMARY:Turn Turn Turn
DESCRIPTION:THIS DHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nMinneapolis-based folk rock trio Turn Turn Turn performs an acoustic concert live on the Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage. Attend in person or watch on livestream! \nTurn Turn Turn is a trio who bonded over their mutual love of close harmony 60s and 70s country\, folk\, and pop music and formed an original Americana band. \nDuluth favorite Mary Bue opens with a solo set. \nE-tickets to attend in person or watch on livestream are available will be available HERE for $12 and $20. SUMMARY:A Very Mimi Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Duluth lost a true friend and artist when Mimi Parker of Low died after a challenging battle with ovarian cancer Nov. 5. Her spirit remains with us in the form of the music she left behind\, one special gift being the band’s beloved Christmas album recorded in 1999. \nThe Duluth music community will gather together and remember Mimi with a special holiday event loving called “A Very Mimi Christmas” from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday\, Dec. 21 at Sacred Heart Music Center. The event will also be live streamed on the Sacred Heart YouTube channel. \n“We wanted to do something to celebrate Mim that would bring people together in the spirit of\nthe season\,” said long-time friend\, Scott Lunt. “Listening to Low’s Christmas album together at\nSacred Heart seemed like the obvious thing to do.” \nThe event will feature a cookie potluck—a nod to Parker’s love of baking\, says Lunt—and a craft table where people can decorate a commemorative tree ornament. “She loved to make stuff\,” he said. “We wanted to include an element in the evening to honor her maker’s spirit.” \nFriends and fans are invited to come\, listen to Low’s Christmas album\, bring a dozen (or two!) cookies to add to the cookie potluck\, decorate a commemorative ornament\, and share some Christmas cheer as we remember our dear Mim in the season she loved so much. \nA suggested donation of $10 will go to benefit Churches United in Ministry\n(CHUM)\, a Duluth organization whose programs serve more than 8\,000 low-income\, homeless\, hungry\, isolated\, or otherwise marginalized community members each year.
