SUMMARY:A Very Mimi Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Duluth lost a true friend and artist when Mimi Parker of Low died after a challenging battle with ovarian cancer Nov. 5. Her spirit remains with us in the form of the music she left behind\, one special gift being the band’s beloved Christmas album recorded in 1999. \nThe Duluth music community will gather together and remember Mimi with a special holiday event loving called “A Very Mimi Christmas” from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday\, Dec. 21 at Sacred Heart Music Center. The event will also be live streamed on the Sacred Heart YouTube channel. \n“We wanted to do something to celebrate Mim that would bring people together in the spirit of\nthe season\,” said long-time friend\, Scott Lunt. “Listening to Low’s Christmas album together at\nSacred Heart seemed like the obvious thing to do.” \nThe event will feature a cookie potluck—a nod to Parker’s love of baking\, says Lunt—and a craft table where people can decorate a commemorative tree ornament. “She loved to make stuff\,” he said. “We wanted to include an element in the evening to honor her maker’s spirit.” \nFriends and fans are invited to come\, listen to Low’s Christmas album\, bring a dozen (or two!) cookies to add to the cookie potluck\, decorate a commemorative ornament\, and share some Christmas cheer as we remember our dear Mim in the season she loved so much. \nA suggested donation of $10 will go to benefit Churches United in Ministry\n(CHUM)\, a Duluth organization whose programs serve more than 8\,000 low-income\, homeless\, hungry\, isolated\, or otherwise marginalized community members each year.

SUMMARY:Joseph Huber
DESCRIPTION:As the singer\, songwriter\, performer\, recorder and producer of all of his own material\, Milwaukee-based roots guitarist Joseph Huber has his hands full\, but never seems to miss a beat. He’s gradually honed a sound that seems to fill a very real gap within the still-emerging Americana genre. Having progressed\, Huber continues moving onward and upward\, captivating folks with his sincere and well-crafted songs and the impeccable musicianship of his fellow touring partners. Whether it’s irresistible\, fiddle-driven\, dancing tunes or dusty\, honest\, heart-wrenching ballads\, Huber’s songs and shows span the spectrum of ‘roots’ music while preferring not to stay within the boundaries of any strict genre classification. \n As of now\, Huber has delivered five solo records including 2021’s ‘The Downtowner.” The new record rollicks between social and personal spheres while mixing elements of rock and folk music that fans will immediately see as maintaining a solid continuity of sound and attitude with his previous two albums. A sound that rollicks between the feelings of freedom and severity\, with both wit and earnestness. \nThe Mahon Brothers from Duluth-based New Salty Dog will open. \nAdvance e-tickets available HERE  for $20. Paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $20 while they last. Doors at 6:30 music at 7:30. \n

SUMMARY:Kardemimmit
DESCRIPTION:Kardemimmit is a band of four awesome women playing the Finnish national instrument\, kantele. \nKardemimmit is in charge of their own music – they compose\, as well as arrange\, write lyrics and produce. Maija Pokela\, Jutta Rahmel\, Anna Wegelius and Leeni Wegelius founded the group in 1999 at the musical institute Juvenalia in the band members’ home town Espoo\, Finland. \nAlongside 15 and 38 stringed kanteles\, singing has a big part in Kardemimmit’s musical universe where original pieces with a modern approach still have a strong foundation in Finnish\, Eastern European and Scandinavian traditions. The Finnish reki-singing style\, 19th century dancing music and Perhonjokilaakso kantele playing style\, Eastern Finnish archaic improvisation and ancient runo singing are all present in Kardemimmit’s music. \nAs a kantele band Kardemimmit is a pioneer: In 2004 Kardemimmit was nominated the Band of the Year by Kantele Association and the next year they won the International Kantele Competition. \nThe group has recorded five albums and tours throughout Europe\, North America and Japan. \nYou might wonder what the band’s name means. It’s a play of words. Kardemumma is a spice that Finnish people use a lot in their sweet baking. Mimmit is a word for girls that have bold nature. That means Kardemimmit is actually the Finnish Ethno Spice Girls. \nAdvance e-tickets available HERE beginning at 10 a.m. Friday. Aug. 12 for $20. Paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. SUMMARY:Dave Simonett
DESCRIPTION:Dave Simonett has spent almost two decades as the lead singer\, guitar player and songwriter for the widely popular and beloved roots band\, Trampled By Turtles. He also fronts Dead Man Winter\, a bull-bodied\, emotionally resonant brand of Americana-infused indie rock band. \nSimonett now boldly steps forward with a shining collection of new solo material for the first time under his own name with the 2020 album “Red Tail” and “Orion\,” an EP released in 2021. While Dead Man Winter’s “Furnace” was a much-needed cathartic experience for Simonett during a dark time\, he is not connecting this collection of songs to his own life as he prefers to allow listeners to develop their own interpretations. \nThe conversational and poetic style in which Simonett writes lends itself to this perfectly\, inspired by the spacious and stark Northern woods of Minnesota\, where he’s from. Drawing from the outdoors\, Simonett uses light\, weather and imagery to paint introspective\, cinematic scenes that are easy to lose yourself in. \nDuluth songwriter Nat Harvie will open the concert with work from the new record “Married in Song.” \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must wear a mask during the performance except when consuming food or beverages. \nTickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. E-tickets are available HERE. Paper tickets available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. \nDoors at 6:30pm. Music at 7:30.

SUMMARY:Andy Peterson Quartet: The music of John Coltrane
DESCRIPTION:Duluth-based saxophonist Andy Peterson will make his Sacred Heart Music Center debut with his jazz quartet composed of some of the finest\, high energy musicians in the Twin Ports. The quartet will offer an exciting show featuring the music of jazz great John Coltrane. \nPeterson has been an active performer and educator in the Twin Cities and Twin Ports area for the past half decade\, playing at venues such as the Dakota Jazz Club\, Jazz Central Studios\, Duluth Cider\, and many other local establishments. As a youth\, Peterson was heavily influenced by the music his mother played around the house\, jazz rooted in the tradition of bebop\, with a modern taste. He makes a point to be creative\, while simultaneously paying respect to the masters. Peterson’s quartet\, a powerful improvisational unit\, consists of pianist Analise Levesque\, bassist Calvin Caron\, and drummer Sten Duginski. \nTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED from April 7. All tickets from the April 7 show will honored at this performance. Refund requests can be made at Eventbrite.com or by contacting info@sacredheartmusic.org.  \nColtrane had an immense impact on the music world\, always searching for new creative messages to share through his music. Only living to the age of 39\, John Coltrane left the world with his music and spiritual messages that encourage love and positivity. His music has influenced generations of musicians following\, in not only the jazz style\, but other facets of music. \nPeterson will perform music played by John Coltrane from 1957 to the end of his life in 1967\, ranging from his initial strides in bebop to his later years of more spiritual experimental music. The Andy Peterson Quartet hopes to provide a night of music that will inspire\, and educate about the greatness of the saxophone legend\, John Coltrane. \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must wear a mask\, provide proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test at the door prior to each show.
