DESCRIPTION:CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS WITH WILLOWGREEN! \nDuluth-based Willowgreen will perform “A Willowgreen Winter: Celtic Music for the Season” at 7pm Saturday\, Dec. 17 at Sacred Heart Music Center.  \nThe seven-piece folk music group will stage traditional and contemporary holiday music from Ireland\, Newfoundland\, Scotland\, Canada\, U.S.A. and the rest of the Celtic music world. Their signature vocal style combined with instrumentation including harp\, hammered dulcimer\, bodhrán\, guitars\, button accordion\, whistles and mandolin appeals to audiences of all ages. \nWillowgreen has performed at many festivals and concert series throughout North America\, including Milwaukee Irish Fest\, Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival\, Chicago Irish Fest\, and Irish Fair of Minnesota. The band performed and recorded extensively between 1984 and 2006. After 15 years apart\, Willowgreen returned to the Sacred Heart altar stage this spring for a special St. Patrick’s Day performance. He has received seven Minnesota Music Awards and has played more than 5\,000 gigs\, including forays to Iceland and Siberia. \nHis book\, “Alphabet Jazz\,” is a collection of poetry\, prose\, stories\, and songs that Metsa wrote between 1984 and 2022. DESCRIPTION:One of Scandinavia’s favorite dance bands\, Dalakopa\, a folk music super group based in Roros\, Norway\, will perform at the Sacred Heart Music Center on Tuesday\, Sept. 27 at 7pm. You will not be able to just sit and listen! \nDalakopa have been together for over 30 years and have incorporated various members during this time. They are an international mix of musicians from Norway\, Sweden\, Denmark and the U.S. \nExperimental Scandinavian-inspired folk band Pony\, based in Minneapolis\, will open. \nDalakopa has toured throughout Europe and the U.S.\, won numerous awards including Spelmannsprisen\, the Norwegian Grammy and recorded 12 albums. In 2018 the group was included in the Norwegian Old Time Dancing Hall of Fame. \nMany of the tunes are traditional while others are composed by the various members of the group in traditional style. The dance styles are the Pols from Norway\, Polska from Sweden\, Halling\, Schottish\, Waltz\, Polka and Mazurka. Their arrangements can be very imaginative with the sound of waves in the background\, occasional use of snare drums\, and on some occasions genre bending incorporating reggae rhythms. \nThe leader of the group is Bengt Jacobsen. Bengt plays several instruments: the accordion\, organ\, piano and fiddle. Mary Barthelemy\, who at one time lived in Silver Bay\, plays the flute for the group\, giving it a unique sound. The others are Oline Sofie Bakkum Hardelin on fiddle; Thore Härdelin\, fiddle and  vokalist; Torill Aasegg\, fiddle og  nyckelharpe ; Jens Nygård\, fiddle; Stein Nygård\, accordion; Roar Kjeldsberg\, bass; and Ole Anders Feragen\,  gitar. Guests have included Lillebror Vesaasen on the accordion; Ronja Jacobsen on the Zitter and Gro Kjellberg Solli\, vocals. \nThe tour was initiated by Folklore Village in Dodgeville\, Wisconsin\, with financial support from the American Scandinavian Foundation. DESCRIPTION:Kardemimmit is a band of four awesome women playing the Finnish national instrument\, kantele.  \nKardemimmit is in charge of their own music – they compose\, as well as arrange\, write lyrics and produce. Maija Pokela\, Jutta Rahmel\, Anna Wegelius and Leeni Wegelius founded the group in 1999 at the musical institute Juvenalia in the band members’ home town Espoo\, Finland. \nAlongside 15 and 38 stringed kanteles\, singing has a big part in Kardemimmit’s musical universe where original pieces with a modern approach still have a strong foundation in Finnish\, Eastern European and Scandinavian traditions. The Finnish reki-singing style\, 19th century dancing music and Perhonjokilaakso kantele playing style\, Eastern Finnish archaic improvisation and ancient runo singing are all present in Kardemimmit’s music. \nAs a kantele band Kardemimmit is a pioneer: In 2004 Kardemimmit was nominated the Band of the Year by Kantele Association and the next year they won the International Kantele Competition. \nThe group has recorded five albums and tours throughout Europe\, North America and Japan. \nYou might wonder what the band’s name means. It’s a play of words. Kardemumma is a spice that Finnish people use a lot in their sweet baking. Mimmit is a word for girls that have bold nature. SUMMARY:Composer Wendy Durrwachter presents: "The Two Trees - A Yeats Song Cycle"
DESCRIPTION:Duluth composer Wendy Durrwachter presents “The Two Trees: A Yeats Song Cycle” on the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage at 7:30pm Thursday\, June 9. \n“The Two Trees: A Yeats Song Cycle” will present music from the album composed by Durrwachter and performed by Durrwachter and Adam Sippola in 2019. \nThe concert will feature Durrwachter on piano\, tenor Adam Sippola and a string quartet of Erin Aldridge\, Marc Haroo\, Jonathan Kresha\, and Byron Klimek. Flautists Paula Gudmundson and Melanie Sever will also perform. \nDurrwachter is a composer completing an indefinite residency at the headwaters of the largest fresh water deposit on earth\, the Great Lakes.  \nDurrwachter was awarded an Arrowhead Regional Arts Council Career Development Grant in 2018 & 2019 – the latter to compose a wind quintet performed by the University of Minnesota Duluth Faculty Wind Quintet at Weber Music Hall. She was recently commissioned by the Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra to compose her first symphony\, “Chequamegon Bay.” \nIn November 2020\, Opera-Oriented Project Sponsorships in Minnesota (OOPS MN) commissioned Durrwachter to compose an aria to a chocolate chip cookie recipe with libretto developed by Pulitzer-Prize winning librettist Mark Campbell. It was performed by MN Opera soprano Tracey Engleman and pianist Jared Miller and recorded to video by HotDishAV.  \nDurrwachter studied piano 15 years with Bishop Michael Bent in Green Bay\, Wisconsin and attended summer piano academies at Indiana University\, Bloomington; and University of Wisconsin\, Whitewater. DESCRIPTION:Dan Israel\, Terry Walsh and Steve Brantseg lead a five-piece rock band onto the Sacred Heart altar stage to celebrate Bob Dylan’s 81st birthday as part of the annual Duluth Dylan Fest events. \nThe Minneapolis-based super group will perform a broad representation of Dylan’s rock and roll side\, leaning heavily on his ’60s golden era with material from “Highway 61 Revisited\,” “Blonde on Blonde” and “Bringing It All Back Home.” \nThe group will also include some choice cuts from Dylan’s ’70s\, ’80s\, ’90s and beyond output. DESCRIPTION:Dave Simonett has spent almost two decades as the lead singer\, guitar player and songwriter for the widely popular and beloved roots band\, Trampled By Turtles. He also fronts Dead Man Winter\, a bull-bodied\, emotionally resonant brand of Americana-infused indie rock band. \nSimonett now boldly steps forward with a shining collection of new solo material for the first time under his own name with the 2020 album “Red Tail” and “Orion\,” an EP released in 2021. While Dead Man Winter’s “Furnace” was a much-needed cathartic experience for Simonett during a dark time\, he is not connecting this collection of songs to his own life as he prefers to allow listeners to develop their own interpretations. \nThe conversational and poetic style in which Simonett writes lends itself to this perfectly\, inspired by the spacious and stark Northern woods of Minnesota\, where he’s from. Teague’s storytelling side has deeper roots to his Irish ancestry. The name ‘Teague’ was once used to describe the storytelling poets who travelled ancient Ireland. DESCRIPTION:People are good. \nIn response to the violence and destruction happening in Ukraine\, many of Duluth’s\nmusicians\, poets and caring people have come together to make a difference in some way and created\nthe event: “Heart to Heart at Sacred Heart\, a concert for Peace and Solidarity With Ukraine.” \n\nAll ticket proceeds and donations gathered from the event will be donated to Heart to Heart\nInternational\, a global humanitarian organization based in Kansas. The organization has established an\nadvance team in Eastern Europe and is shipping medical aid into Ukraine and hygiene kits into Poland to\nsupport refugee work. \nDONATE NOW HERE! \nThe concert promises to be varied and diverse\, ranging from music on the Felgemaker organ to peace and antiwar songs performed by the very talented Twin Ports music community and poets. DESCRIPTION:Duluth-based saxophonist Andy Peterson will make his Sacred Heart Music Center debut with his jazz quartet composed of some of the finest\, high energy musicians in the Twin Ports. The quartet will offer an exciting show featuring the music of jazz great John Coltrane. \nPeterson has been an active performer and educator in the Twin Cities and Twin Ports area for the past half decade\, playing at venues such as the Dakota Jazz Club\, Jazz Central Studios\, Duluth Cider\, and many other local establishments. As a youth\, Peterson was heavily influenced by the music his mother played around the house\, jazz rooted in the tradition of bebop\, with a modern taste. He makes a point to be creative\, while simultaneously paying respect to the masters. Peterson’s quartet\, a powerful improvisational unit\, consists of pianist Analise Levesque\, bassist Calvin Caron\, and drummer Sten Duginski. \nTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED from April 7. Only living to the age of 39\, John Coltrane left the world with his music and spiritual messages that encourage love and positivity. His music has influenced generations of musicians following\, in not only the jazz style\, but other facets of music. \nPeterson will perform music played by John Coltrane from 1957 to the end of his life in 1967\, ranging from his initial strides in bebop to his later years of more spiritual experimental music.
