SUMMARY:Friends of the Felgemaker: Early music concert
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of the Felgemaker as early music specialist Shelley Gruskin leads a host of other wonderful instrumentalists and singers to perform “Lovers Made Men” in concert form. \n“Lovers Made Men” is a Jacobean era masque written by Ben Jonson with music composed by Nicholas Lanier. Written as a form of courtly entertainment\, masques flourished in 16th century and early 17th century Europe. “Lovers Made Men” was particularly significant in the development and acceptance of opera in 17th century England. \nAdditional repertoire includes a recorder concerto by Anton Heberle and Spanish Renaissance pieces played on the Felgemaker pipe organ. As part of the concert\, Gruskin will demonstrate a variety of early instruments in relation to organ stops\, such as the gemshorn\, conical and cylindrical recorders\, krummhorn\, and raushpfeife. \nShelley Gruskin is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and was flutist with the NBC Opera Company until turning his attention to early music and early instruments. He was a member of the New York Pro Musica\, a pioneer ensemble in the performance of Medieval and Renaissance music. In 1978\, he initiated the country’s first undergraduate degree in early music performance at the College of St. Scholastica. He has been listed as one of 10 most influential recorder players of the modern revival. \nThe concert is free with a $20 suggested donation. Please RSVP HERE on Eventbrite.
