SUMMARY:Gully Boys: Femme Punk Night
DESCRIPTION:It’s gonna be loud! \nWe’re bringing in Gully Boys\, one of the hottest punk bands from the Twin Cities\, to headline a special Femme Punk Night with support from Duluth’s own Mara Lovejoy and Yonder. Don’t miss this all-ages marathon of musical mayhem beginning at 7 pm\, Friday\, Oct. 11. \nGully Boys origin story plays out like the perfect domino effect. While sorting vintage clothes in a Minneapolis-area thrift store in 2016\, Kathy Callahan (she/her) shared her dream of becoming a vocalist with their co-worker\, Nadirah McGill (they/them). After encouraging a friend from middle school\, Natalie Klemond (she/her)\, to join the trio on bass\, Nadi picked up a pair of drumsticks and counted off a cover of Best Coast’s “Girlfriend.” Gully Boys had officially been born. \nHaving to master their instruments on the fly\, the band’s sound grew quickly – taking inspiration from 90’s icons like No Doubt\, Garbage\, and Hole. The band earned Best New Band honors from their hometown weekly City Pages and shared the stage with everyone from The Hold Steady to Third Eye Blind. \nGully Boys released the EP Phoney in late 2019\, Favorite Son in 2021\, and the single Optimist (2023). The group has performed at official SXSW showcases and played iconic stages across Minnesota including First Avenue’s main stage and the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival. It has toured nationally with artists Nova Twins\, Motion City Soundtrack\, Destroy Boys and Bad Bad Hats. \nOpening the night will be two Duluth-based femme punk bands Mara Lovejoy and Yonder Band. \nThis activity is made possible in part by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council thanks to appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature’s general and arts and cultural heritage funds. \nAdvance tickets are available on Eventbrite HERE for $20 (plus fees) beginning at 10 a.m Friday Aug. 30. Advance paper tickets will be available for $20 (plus fees) at Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth and Globe News in Superior. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while supply lasts. Doors at 6 pm. Music at 7 pm.

SUMMARY:Väsen
DESCRIPTION:Väsen-Duo\, Mikael Marin and Olov Johansson have\, after 37 years of interaction and touring\, refined their sound and their stage presence to the extent that today they are unique in their kind. With their playful and perfect interplay\, they seem to defy the laws of physics in what appears to be a telepathic communication. \nVäsen will perform at the beautiful Sacred Heart altar stage at 7:30 pm\, Thursday\, Sept. 19. \nThe music is intense and full of humour. They create their very own musical language which in its appeal is as modern as it is ancient. With the foundation firmly rooted in the traditional music of Uppland\, they have always looked curiously at new musical goals. \nOlov & Micke have played together since 1983 when they met at Oktoberstämman in Uppsala and discovered that they had a large common repertoire and a similar way of playing. They have recorded and released more than 20 albums. Melliken was released in 2023. A collaboration with Hawktail is due this fall. \nDuluth-based Ponyfolk will open. \nAdvance Eventbrite tickets will be available at 10 am Friday\, Aug. 2 for $20 HERE. Advance paper tickets will be available for $20 at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available for $25 at the door while supply lasts. Doors at 6:30. SUMMARY:Humbird
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter Humbird celebrates the release of her third album Right On with a full-band performance on the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage Thursday\, May 30. \nSiri Undlin (the songwriter behind the moniker) and her collaborators tracked Right On over the course of two muggy weeks in Eau Claire\, Wisconsin. For a collection of songs unafraid of ambiguity\, it’s music that bares its teeth. Anger and dismay sizzle in response to current events. Heartbreak feels like sandpaper\, while wildflowers bob and sway in an ever-expanding universe. \nProduced by Shane Leonard and featuring regular contributors Pat Keen (bass\, synth\, percussion) and Pete Quirsfeld (drums and percussion)\, the majority of the songs showcase the locked-in rock trio\, a progression from the contemplative folk musings of Humbird’s previous releases. \nBay area songwriter Avery Hellman\, performing as ISMAY\, will open the concert. \nBuy Tickets\nAdvance E-tickets are available now HERE for $20. Advance paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while supply lasts. Doors at 6:30pm. SUMMARY:The Cactus Blossoms
DESCRIPTION:“Hey baby\, do you wanna take a trip with me? / I’ve got a feeling there might be a silver lining all around.” \nSo begins One Day\, the captivating new album from critically acclaimed Minneapolis duo The Cactus Blossoms. Written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic\, the record explores the tension between optimism and despair that’s defined much of the past few years of American life. The songs here are tender and timeless\, with straightforward arrangements centered around brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum’s airtight harmonies. The performances are warm and intimate to match\, delivered with a soulful\, ’70s-inspired palette of playful Wurlitzer\, breezy guitars\, and muscular percussion. \nDon’t miss The Cactus Blossoms return to the Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage at 8 pm Sunday\, May 19. Minneapolis-based singer songwriter Dan Israel opens with a special solo performance. \nThe Cactus Blossoms broke out nationally in 2016 with their JD McPherson-produced debut\, You’re Dreaming. Dates with Kacey Musgraves\, Jenny Lewis\, and Lucius followed\, as did raves from the New York Times and NPR\, who praised “the brothers’ extraordinary singing.” \nAdvance e-tickets available HERE at Eventbrite.com beginning at 10am Friday\, March 15. Advance paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door while supply lasts. Doors at 7pm. Music at 8.

SUMMARY:Chastity Brown
DESCRIPTION:As the daughter of a blues musician\, Chastity Brown was born with an innate ability to channel complex circumstances into beautiful\, uplifting songs. But after surviving the isolation of the early pandemic and witnessing the global racial reckoning that manifested itself in the riots mere blocks from her South Minneapolis home\, even she is surprised to hear the way her new album Sing To The Walls turned out. \n“It’s a love album\, in a way I didn’t plan on\,” Chastity says. \nLike so many artists who endured the uncertainty of the 2020 lockdown\, Chastity’s instinct was to turn inward\, at first out of self-preservation\, and then because the new songs kept coming and coming. Since finishing her last album\, 2017’s Silhouette Of Sirens\, she estimates she’s written nearly 100 new songs\, 10 of which found their way onto Sing To The Walls. \nDon’t miss Chastity Brown performing songs from her new record and all her old favorites on the beautiful Sacred Heart altar stage. \nDuluth singer-songwriter Nolen Sellwood will open. \nBuy Tickets\nAdvance E-tickets are available for $20 on Eventbrite.com HERE. Paper tickets will be available at Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth and Globe News in Superior. Tickets will be available at the door while supply lasts for $25. Doors open at 6:30. Music at 7:30. SUMMARY:Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold Songwriter Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Presenting some of the finest northland music makers\, Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold will host their 3rd Annual Songwriter Showcase at 7 pm Saturday\, March 23 on the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage. \nThis one-time-only event features three singer-songwriters performing a solo set of their original music for a live audience\, discussing the craft of songwriting\, and sharing stories that inspire their music. Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold will conclude the night with a full band performance. \n2024 featured artists are: Shane Nelson\, Hannah Rey and Skarlett Woods. \nFrank said the inspiration for this event emerged in part by reflecting on his own journey as a singer songwriter\, and in part through his admiration of the multitude of gifted songwriters and performers in the Twin Ports area. \n“Songwriting lives at the heart of all music\, regardless of genre or instrumentation. It is a process of self-reflection and storytelling mixed with creative melodic expression\,” said Frank. “I have always been amazed at the sheer number of musicians in the Duluth area who write and perform their own original music. Many of these people are my dear friends\, and comprise a beautiful\, passionate\, and supportive community. My vision for this event is to showcase a small fraction of that talent by highlighting some singer-songwriters who are pillars of this community\, and who have inspired my own craft.” \nBuy Tickets\nAdvance E-Tickets are available for $15 on Eventbrite.com HERE. SUMMARY:Mr. Sun
DESCRIPTION:Mr Sun comprises some of the most original musicians to apply themselves to the American String Band. \nLegendary fiddler Darol Anger is at home in a number of musical genres\, some of which he helped to invent\, and is a member of the original “nuclear” generation of pickers who extended Bluegrass\, Jazz\, and Classical music to find their common ground; Mr Sun is the latest iteration in that legacy. \nDuluth native Joe K. Walsh is one of the foremost contemporary mandolinists\, with four award-winning years in the Gibson Brothers\, three solo recordings\, and a Berklee professorship. \nGrant Gordy is a standout in the crowded field of Acoustic Guitar Wunderkinds. Grant’s work was quickly recognized for its kaleidoscopic excellence and startling emotion\, fusing Jazz\, R&B\, and Bluegrass concepts to an unprecedented degree. \nThe group recently added the masterful bassist Aidan O’Donnell\, a Brooklyn\, New York (by way of Scotland) jazz veteran. \nThe four musical personalities of Mr Sun are so strong that one might imagine the group could explode if not for the palpable love and humor that emanate from every note they play together. The group means to take a relaxed approach to writing its own chapter in the American Music Saga with their new Compass Records release “extrovert”\, on CD & bright yellow vinyl. \nAdvance e-tickets are available HERE for $20. Advance paper tickets are available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while supplies last. Doors at 6 pm. Music at 7.

SUMMARY:Turn Turn Turn
DESCRIPTION:THIS DHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nMinneapolis-based folk rock trio Turn Turn Turn performs an acoustic concert live on the Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage. Attend in person or watch on livestream! \nTurn Turn Turn is a trio who bonded over their mutual love of close harmony 60s and 70s country\, folk\, and pop music and formed an original Americana band. To create their distinctive sound\, the band “turns” to the distant past of early American recorded music\, “turns” again to that renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s\, and finally “turns” again to the present looking forward. \nMembers Adam Levy (guitar\, vocals)\, Savannah Smith (guitar\, vocals) and Barb Brynstad (bass\, vocals) are all mainstays of the Minnesota music scene and together craft an infectious\, pop-infused Americana. \nEven though Turn Turn Turn was born as a cover band\, the group’s original material – sweetheart alt-country folk-pop – quickly stole the spotlight. \nDuluth favorite Mary Bue opens with a solo set. \nE-tickets to attend in person or watch on livestream are available will be available HERE for $12 and $20. Advance paper tickets are available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while supplies last. Doors at 6:30.
