SUMMARY:Storyhill
DESCRIPTION:Bozeman\, Montana-based duo Storyhill celebrates the holidays with a start-to-finish performance of their Christmas album “Bethlehem” on the Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage in Duluth. \nMaine-based singer-songwriter Connor Garvey opens. \nThe show is scheduled for 7:30 pm Friday\, Dec. 16. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. \nAfter three decades of writing and performing together\, Chris Cunningham and John Hermanson recorded their first holiday album together called “Bethlehem.” The record embraced the full depth and meaning of the Advent and Christmas season and leans into the message of hope for a more peaceful world. \nThe sound and feel of “Bethlehem” is centered solidly around acoustic guitars and intently focused harmonies. The album was an instant Christmas folk classic\, providing an oasis of peace and calm and bringing some light into times when we need it most. \nStoryhill will perform “Bethlehem” front-to-back along with reimagined Christmas standards and some of their own originals from 30+ years of writing together. \nE-Tickets are available now HERE for $20. Paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while they last. Doors at 6:30. Music at 7:30. \n(Photo by Michael K. Anderson)

SUMMARY:Joseph Huber
DESCRIPTION:As the singer\, songwriter\, performer\, recorder and producer of all of his own material\, Milwaukee-based roots guitarist Joseph Huber has his hands full\, but never seems to miss a beat. He’s gradually honed a sound that seems to fill a very real gap within the still-emerging Americana genre. Having progressed\, Huber continues moving onward and upward\, captivating folks with his sincere and well-crafted songs and the impeccable musicianship of his fellow touring partners. Whether it’s irresistible\, fiddle-driven\, dancing tunes or dusty\, honest\, heart-wrenching ballads\, Huber’s songs and shows span the spectrum of ‘roots’ music while preferring not to stay within the boundaries of any strict genre classification. \n As of now\, Huber has delivered five solo records including 2021’s ‘The Downtowner.” The new record rollicks between social and personal spheres while mixing elements of rock and folk music that fans will immediately see as maintaining a solid continuity of sound and attitude with his previous two albums. A sound that rollicks between the feelings of freedom and severity\, with both wit and earnestness. \nThe Mahon Brothers from Duluth-based New Salty Dog will open. \nAdvance e-tickets available HERE  for $20. Paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $20 while they last. Doors at 6:30 music at 7:30. \n

SUMMARY:Turn Turn Turn
DESCRIPTION:Turn Turn Turn is a trio who bonded over their mutual love of close harmony 60s and 70s country\, folk\, and pop music and formed an original Americana band. To create their distinctive sound\, the band “turns” to the distant past of early American recorded music\, “turns” again to that renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s\, and finally “turns” again to the present looking forward. \nMembers Adam Levy (guitar\, vocals)\, Savannah Smith (guitar\, vocals) and Barb Brynstad (bass\, vocals) are all mainstays of the Minnesota music scene and together craft an infectious\, pop-infused Americana. \nLevy is a veteran of the Minnesota rock scene\, best known for leading up alt-rock band The Honeydogs. As a prolific songwriter and producer\, he has worked across many genres and performed around the world. \nSmith needs only needs 30 seconds to win you over with vocal prowess\, and absolute mastery of crafting raw and gritty emotion into beautiful melodies. She has worked with such acts as Trampled by Turtles\, William Elliot Whitmore and Laura Stevenson. \nBrynstad is an in-demand musician with decades-long roots in the Twin Cities music community. As a singer\, bassist and guitarist\, she has performed with a variety of musicians\, including Chastity Brown (folk/Americana)\, Tina Schlieske (pop/rock)\, Willie Wisely (pop/rock)\, and the late great Willie Murphy (blues/soul). \nEven though Turn Turn Turn was born as a cover band\, the group’s original material – sweetheart alt-country folk-pop with a smattering of soulful strut – quickly stole the spotlight. When the members of Turn Turn Turn sing together\, their voices – each with a distinctive timbre and complementary range – blend in a delectable\, cosmic way\, forming a rootsy\, Laurel Canyon-inspired sound that is both distinctive and familiar. \nDuluth-based country artist Heidi Pack of Whiskey Trail will open. \nAdvance e-tickets available HERE beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday\, Sept. 1 for $20. Paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while they last. Doors at 6:30 music at 7:30. \n

SUMMARY:Humbird/Lanue
DESCRIPTION:Two of Minnesota’s best cutting-edge songwriters\, Duluth-based Lanue and Minneapolis-based Humbird\, share the beautiful Sacred Heart altar stage in a special one-night-only\, live-audience performance at 7:30 pm Thursday\, Oct. 20. \nLanue \nFeeling detached from her previously released work\, Sarah Krueger assembled a cast of collaborators in 2021 to help flesh out a collection of new songs that would later become the catalyst for Lanue. \nCulled from the title of a poem that found its way to Krueger from a thrift store shelf\, Lanue stands firmly in front of a fresh creative backdrop and boasts a more developed taste and sincerity than Krueger’s previous releases — both a welcome departure and anticipated return. \nIn Lanue’s self titled LP\, Krueger continues to amplify her knack for straightforward and earnest songwriting while maintaining a vocal delivery that sits like honey over layers of warm synths\, guitars\, and percussion. Ranging from confessional to nostalgic\, each track is brightened by a lush lift while continuing to rest inside the framework of the folk tradition. \nHumbird \nInspired by the crystalline chill of the north country she calls home in Minnesota\, Humbird combines a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale. Humbird’s music moves between experimental folk and environmental Americana to embrace the unexpected. The music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house. It leaves bread crumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars. \nSiri Undlin witnessed the power of storytelling in her childhood home and began writing music and performing in church choirs and in Irish ensembles from a young age. Her voice\, which contains the unwavering fortitude of hymnal melodies\, reveals her traditional background. \nIn 2019\, Humbird released the critically acclaimed\, debut full-length\, Pharmakon\, which introduced us to Humbird’s songcraft and harmonic folk style. \nAdvance e-tickets available HERE beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday\, Sept. 1 for $20. Paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while they last. \nCan’t make it? SUMMARY:David Huckfelt with Annie Humphrey
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter and folk activist David Huckfelt of The Pines returns to the Sacred Heart altar stage as a solo artist\, performing work from his latest album “Room Enough\, Time Enough\,” inspired by the Native American story. \nOjibwe musician and artist Annie Humphrey will open the concert. \n“The phrase ‘Room Enough\, Time Enough’ comes from a name the Navajo used to describe their ancestral homeland in northern Arizona and New Mexico\, not far from where the record was made\,” Huckfelt says. “It’s one of the most breathtaking and beautiful places in the country\, where a person can hear themselves not-think\, a place where every mesa and every rock is a god with a name and power. We are fortunate to even be allowed to pass through this land.” \n“Room Enough\, Time Enough” draws inspiration from such powerful protest records as Johnny Cash’s “Bitter Tears” and Floyd Red Crow Westerman’s “Custer Died For Your Sins”; records that open a trap door to a different version of America\, and speak out against oppression while holding fast to beauty for beauty’s sake. \nIn a career on the road less traveled that has found him sharing stages with a staggering diversity of artists: from Mavis Staples & Emmylou Harris\, to Bon Iver & Arcade Fire\, and more recently an impressive array of Native American musicians including John Trudell\, Quiltman\, Keith Secola\, and Annie Humphrey\, Huckfelt wanted to build a new musical community for this collection of songs. \n“I feel that with this record I’m just getting started offering what I want to offer\, giving what I want to give. The line from “Better To See the Face” might say it all for me – “you just spend your love like you’re going out of style”\, because we all are. Every time I work with someone I love and admire\, I’m humbled just to be taking part in the conversation about the strong medicine that can heal America. “Room Enough\, Time Enough” is the next step in that ceremony.” \nAdvance e-tickets available HERE beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday\, Sept. 1 for $20. Paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while they last. \n

SUMMARY:Kardemimmit
DESCRIPTION:Kardemimmit is a band of four awesome women playing the Finnish national instrument\, kantele. \nKardemimmit is in charge of their own music – they compose\, as well as arrange\, write lyrics and produce. Maija Pokela\, Jutta Rahmel\, Anna Wegelius and Leeni Wegelius founded the group in 1999 at the musical institute Juvenalia in the band members’ home town Espoo\, Finland. \nAlongside 15 and 38 stringed kanteles\, singing has a big part in Kardemimmit’s musical universe where original pieces with a modern approach still have a strong foundation in Finnish\, Eastern European and Scandinavian traditions. The Finnish reki-singing style\, 19th century dancing music and Perhonjokilaakso kantele playing style\, Eastern Finnish archaic improvisation and ancient runo singing are all present in Kardemimmit’s music. \nAs a kantele band Kardemimmit is a pioneer: In 2004 Kardemimmit was nominated the Band of the Year by Kantele Association and the next year they won the International Kantele Competition. \nThe group has recorded five albums and tours throughout Europe\, North America and Japan. \nYou might wonder what the band’s name means. It’s a play of words. Kardemumma is a spice that Finnish people use a lot in their sweet baking. Mimmit is a word for girls that have bold nature. That means Kardemimmit is actually the Finnish Ethno Spice Girls. \nAdvance e-tickets available HERE beginning at 10 a.m. Friday. Aug. 12 for $20. Paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. SUMMARY:Dave Simonett
DESCRIPTION:Dave Simonett has spent almost two decades as the lead singer\, guitar player and songwriter for the widely popular and beloved roots band\, Trampled By Turtles. He also fronts Dead Man Winter\, a bull-bodied\, emotionally resonant brand of Americana-infused indie rock band. \nSimonett now boldly steps forward with a shining collection of new solo material for the first time under his own name with the 2020 album “Red Tail” and “Orion\,” an EP released in 2021. While Dead Man Winter’s “Furnace” was a much-needed cathartic experience for Simonett during a dark time\, he is not connecting this collection of songs to his own life as he prefers to allow listeners to develop their own interpretations. \nThe conversational and poetic style in which Simonett writes lends itself to this perfectly\, inspired by the spacious and stark Northern woods of Minnesota\, where he’s from. Drawing from the outdoors\, Simonett uses light\, weather and imagery to paint introspective\, cinematic scenes that are easy to lose yourself in. \nDuluth songwriter Nat Harvie will open the concert with work from the new record “Married in Song.” \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must wear a mask during the performance except when consuming food or beverages. \nTickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. E-tickets are available HERE. Paper tickets available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. \nDoors at 6:30pm. Music at 7:30.
