SUMMARY:Kardemimmit
DESCRIPTION:Kardemimmit is a band of four awesome women playing the Finnish national instrument\, kantele. \nKardemimmit is in charge of their own music – they compose\, as well as arrange\, write lyrics and produce. Maija Pokela\, Jutta Rahmel\, Anna Wegelius and Leeni Wegelius founded the group in 1999 at the musical institute Juvenalia in the band members’ home town Espoo\, Finland. \nAlongside 15 and 38 stringed kanteles\, singing has a big part in Kardemimmit’s musical universe where original pieces with a modern approach still have a strong foundation in Finnish\, Eastern European and Scandinavian traditions. The Finnish reki-singing style\, 19th century dancing music and Perhonjokilaakso kantele playing style\, Eastern Finnish archaic improvisation and ancient runo singing are all present in Kardemimmit’s music. \nAs a kantele band Kardemimmit is a pioneer: In 2004 Kardemimmit was nominated the Band of the Year by Kantele Association and the next year they won the International Kantele Competition. \nThe group has recorded five albums and tours throughout Europe\, North America and Japan. \nYou might wonder what the band’s name means. It’s a play of words. Kardemumma is a spice that Finnish people use a lot in their sweet baking. Mimmit is a word for girls that have bold nature. That means Kardemimmit is actually the Finnish Ethno Spice Girls. \nAdvance e-tickets available HERE beginning at 10 a.m. Friday. Aug. 12 for $20. Paper tickets will be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while they last. \nNotice: Sacred Heart Music Center requires masks for everyone attending performances.

SUMMARY:Dave Simonett
DESCRIPTION:Dave Simonett has spent almost two decades as the lead singer\, guitar player and songwriter for the widely popular and beloved roots band\, Trampled By Turtles. He also fronts Dead Man Winter\, a bull-bodied\, emotionally resonant brand of Americana-infused indie rock band. \nSimonett now boldly steps forward with a shining collection of new solo material for the first time under his own name with the 2020 album “Red Tail” and “Orion\,” an EP released in 2021. While Dead Man Winter’s “Furnace” was a much-needed cathartic experience for Simonett during a dark time\, he is not connecting this collection of songs to his own life as he prefers to allow listeners to develop their own interpretations. \nThe conversational and poetic style in which Simonett writes lends itself to this perfectly\, inspired by the spacious and stark Northern woods of Minnesota\, where he’s from. Drawing from the outdoors\, Simonett uses light\, weather and imagery to paint introspective\, cinematic scenes that are easy to lose yourself in. \nDuluth songwriter Nat Harvie will open the concert with work from the new record “Married in Song.” \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must wear a mask during the performance except when consuming food or beverages. \nTickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. E-tickets are available HERE. Paper tickets available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. \nDoors at 6:30pm. Music at 7:30.

SUMMARY:Songwriter Showcase hosted by Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing some of the finest Twin Ports music makers\, Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold will host the first ever Duluth Songwriter Showcase Saturday\, March 12 on the Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage. \nThe event will feature four Duluth-based singer-songwriters performing a short solo set of their original material for a live audience\, discussing the craft of songwriting\, and sharing stories that inspire their music. Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold will conclude the night with a one-hour full band performance. \nFrank said the inspiration for this event emerged in part by reflecting on his own journey as a singer songwriter\, and in part through his admiration of the multitude of gifted songwriters and performers in the Twin Ports area. \n “Songwriting lives at the heart of all music\, regardless of genre or instrumentation. It is a process of self-reflection and storytelling mixed with creative melodic expression\,” said Frank. “I have always been amazed at the sheer number of musicians in the Duluth area who write and perform their own original music. Many of these people are my dear friends\, and comprise a beautiful\, passionate\, and supportive community. My vision for this event is to showcase a small fraction of that talent by highlighting some singer-songwriters who are pillars of this community\, and who have inspired my own craft.” \nFeatured artist include: Adam Starhia of the Black River Revue\, “Boss Mama” Colleen Myhre\, Nate Weiler of the Low Sons\, and Breanne Tepler of Breanne Marie & The Front Porch Sinners. Danny and his band hope to make this an annual event\, highlighting different musicians each year. \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must wear a mask\, provide proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test at the door prior to each show. Phone photos of vaccination cards will be accepted. Further precautions may be taken pending state and county health guidelines. \nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. SUMMARY:Lost Dog Street Band
DESCRIPTION:Returning to the stripped-back\, string band sound of their busking years\, Lost Dog Street Band’s new album Glory is a searing testament to recovery\, redemption and resolve. Fronted by songwriter Benjamin Tod and his wife\, fiddler Ashley Mae\, the DIY band began out of desperation on the sidewalks of Nashville roughly a decade ago\, but now sustains a significant national audience that’s drawn to their authentic songwriting\, old-time instrumentation\, and hard-won independence. \nThe couple formed Lost Dog Street Band in the winter of 2010. The duo’s vision was to carry on the tradition of the American troubadour with fine Americana song craft and starkly real storytelling. Today\, Ben and Ashley Mae are joined by bassist Jeff Loops of the beloved roots band\, Deep Chatham. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWithout touring in 2020\, Benjamin Tod and Ashley Mae settled on a parcel of land in rural Kentucky that they bulldozed themselves\, building a cabin with well water and solar panels. Every week\, even now\, Benjamin Tod says he takes account of his situation as a recovering addict. \n“In society as a whole\, there’s a real lack in examples of actual recovery\,” he says. “There’s not a brutally honest take on how painful the process is\, but how rewarding it is at the same time. Every step that you make helps encourage you to meet the next milestone. It’s like a punch in the face and the kiss on the cheek every day. It’s very personal for me\, the concept of digging out of hell\, because I had to do that in order to gain my own dignity back. Everything follows after that. You have to earn your own respect of yourself before you earn it from anybody else.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNOTICE: All concert-goers must wear a mask\, provide proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test at the door prior to each show. Phone photos of vaccination cards will be accepted. Further precautions may be taken pending state and county health guidelines. \nAll tickets sold for the cancelled 2020 dates will be honored at the March 10\, 2022 concert. Advance e-tickets are sold out. A small number of paper tickets are available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $20. \nDoors at 6 pm; music at 7. \n
