SUMMARY:Songwriter Showcase hosted by Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing some of the finest Twin Ports music makers\, Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold will host the first ever Duluth Songwriter Showcase Saturday\, March 12 on the Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage. \nThe event will feature four Duluth-based singer-songwriters performing a short solo set of their original material for a live audience\, discussing the craft of songwriting\, and sharing stories that inspire their music. Danny Frank & The Smoky Gold will conclude the night with a one-hour full band performance. \nFrank said the inspiration for this event emerged in part by reflecting on his own journey as a singer songwriter\, and in part through his admiration of the multitude of gifted songwriters and performers in the Twin Ports area. \n “Songwriting lives at the heart of all music\, regardless of genre or instrumentation. It is a process of self-reflection and storytelling mixed with creative melodic expression\,” said Frank. “I have always been amazed at the sheer number of musicians in the Duluth area who write and perform their own original music. Many of these people are my dear friends\, and comprise a beautiful\, passionate\, and supportive community. My vision for this event is to showcase a small fraction of that talent by highlighting some singer-songwriters who are pillars of this community\, and who have inspired my own craft.” \nFeatured artist include: Adam Starhia of the Black River Revue\, “Boss Mama” Colleen Myhre\, Nate Weiler of the Low Sons\, and Breanne Tepler of Breanne Marie & The Front Porch Sinners. SUMMARY:Lost Dog Street Band
DESCRIPTION:Returning to the stripped-back\, string band sound of their busking years\, Lost Dog Street Band’s new album Glory is a searing testament to recovery\, redemption and resolve. Fronted by songwriter Benjamin Tod and his wife\, fiddler Ashley Mae\, the DIY band began out of desperation on the sidewalks of Nashville roughly a decade ago\, but now sustains a significant national audience that’s drawn to their authentic songwriting\, old-time instrumentation\, and hard-won independence. \nThe couple formed Lost Dog Street Band in the winter of 2010. The duo’s vision was to carry on the tradition of the American troubadour with fine Americana song craft and starkly real storytelling. Today\, Ben and Ashley Mae are joined by bassist Jeff Loops of the beloved roots band\, Deep Chatham. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWithout touring in 2020\, Benjamin Tod and Ashley Mae settled on a parcel of land in rural Kentucky that they bulldozed themselves\, building a cabin with well water and solar panels. Every week\, even now\, Benjamin Tod says he takes account of his situation as a recovering addict. \n“In society as a whole\, there’s a real lack in examples of actual recovery\,” he says. “There’s not a brutally honest take on how painful the process is\, but how rewarding it is at the same time. Every step that you make helps encourage you to meet the next milestone. It’s like a punch in the face and the kiss on the cheek every day. It’s very personal for me\, the concept of digging out of hell\, because I had to do that in order to gain my own dignity back. Everything follows after that. You have to earn your own respect of yourself before you earn it from anybody else.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNOTICE: All concert-goers must wear a mask\, provide proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test at the door prior to each show. Phone photos of vaccination cards will be accepted. Further precautions may be taken pending state and county health guidelines. \nAll tickets sold for the cancelled 2020 dates will be honored at the March 10\, 2022 concert. Advance e-tickets are sold out. A small number of paper tickets are available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $20. \nDoors at 6 pm; music at 7. \n

SUMMARY:Mason Jennings
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota favorite Mason Jennings returns to the Sacred Heart Music Center stage as part of his first midwest tour since the 2020 pandemic shutdown. \n Performing virtual shows and only a handful of live audience events\, Jennings has spent the pandemic painting\, making visual art and releasing music in his side project band Painted Shields. This solo tour will feature songs from his most recent album “Songs From When We Met\,” old favorites and new creations. \nWhen Jennings started writing songs for his new record\, Songs From When We Met\, he was in a setting he had never written in before. “I was living out at a farm for a month and walking through some old woods on the property every day. There was a river. And each day an owl would come find me\, and then perch above me\, day or night. I saw lots of snakes. Songs just came to me there. They were coming in so fast they just about took my head off. It was unlike anything I’ve experienced before\,” recalls Jennings. In Native American animal medicine snakes symbolize rebirth\, owls symbolize seeing what others cannot and turning darkness into light. Both are themes throughout the album and the music has a clear hopeful feeling. \nIn addition to his solo work\, Mason has started a new band called Painted Shield with Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam\, Matt Chamberlain\, and Brittany Davis. Their first album called Painted Shield was released on Nov. 27\, 2020 on Loosegroove records. \nThe single “Fourth of July” from Painted Shield II was released – fittingly – on July 1 of this year. The video is available on YouTube. \n“The lyrics to this song were inspired by the stories of friends of mine who have served in the military. It touches on the recovery work needed to integrate back into civilian life after being in conflict. It also touches on the fact that most of my friends who joined the military were coming from troubled homes and were looking to find a “way out” by joining\,” wrote Jennings on his Facebook page. “This song is about bringing these inner children home to get the love they never received\, as well as sending love to the actual children affected by war around the world everyday. There is a tension represented that I hope encapsulates and reflects the human struggle\, the struggle for peace and love in the face of violence and fear.” \nJennings has written\, recorded music and toured for close to 25 years. After spending almost 18 months away from the stage\, he recently performed at the Parkway Theatre in Minneapolis. \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must provide proof of vaccination or a 72-hour negative COVID-19 test at the door prior to each show. Phone photos of vaccination cards will be accepted. Further precautions may be taken pending state and county health guidelines. \nE-tickets are available HERE. Tickets will also be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. \nDoors at 7pm. Music at 8.

SUMMARY:Storyhill
DESCRIPTION:Bozeman\, Montana-based duo Storyhill celebrates the release of its first-ever Christmas album “Bethlehem” with a performance at Sacred Heart Music Center in Duluth. \nIn three decades of writing and performing together\, Chris Cunningham and John Hermanson have never recorded a holiday album. Set for release Nov. 27\, “Bethlehem” embraces the full depth and meaning of the Advent and Christmas season. This album leans into the message of hope for a more peaceful world. \n“We wanted to make a record that added something new to the conversation about the Christmas story\, a vision that flips the narrative of this world and makes the first last\, the last first and lifts up the lowly among us\,” John says.” We wanted to explore the story of a poor refugee\, born in a manger\, because none would take him in.” \nThese themes became increasingly relevant as Storyhill touring came to an abrupt halt in March 2020 with the onset of the pandemic. \nThe sound and feel of “Bethlehem” is centered solidly around acoustic guitars and intently focused harmonies. The album will appeal to fans of Storyhill\, and hopefully become a go to Christmas folk classic\, providing an oasis of peace and calm and bringing some light into times when we need it most. \nWith Twin Ports favorite Ida Jo opening. \n* NOTICE: A proof of vaccination card or negative COVID-19 test with the last 72 hours is required to gain entry* \nThe show is scheduled for 7 pm Sunday\, Nov. 14. Tickets go on sale Oct. 1 and are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Purchase tickets HERE. Tickets will also be available at Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth and Globe News in Superior. \nDoors at 6 pm. Showtime at 7pm

SUMMARY:Cactus Blossoms
DESCRIPTION:Twin Cities brother-duo The Cactus Blossoms bring their stunning harmonies and haunting Americana back to Sacred Heart Music Center. \nBlood Harmony. Whether it’s The Beach Boys\, Bee Gees or First Aid Kit\, that sibling vocal blend is the secret sauce in some of the most spine-tingling moments in popular music. The Cactus Blossoms – Minneapolis-based brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey – offer compelling evidence that this tradition is alive and well\, with a deceptively unadorned musical approach that offers “creative turns of phrase\, gorgeous harmonies\, and an ageless sound” (NPR All Things Considered)\, not to mention spine tingles aplenty. Their 2016 debut You’re Dreaming\, a stunning and transporting collection of original songs\, earned high praise from Rolling Stone and Vice Noisey\, tour stints with Kacey Musgraves and Lucius\, and a perfectly cast performance on the third season of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Now their unlikely rise continues with new album Easy Way\, to be released on their own label Walkie Talkie Records. \nWhile many bands would have been content to stick with the winning formula of their debut\, the Blossoms refused to repeat themselves. If You’re Dreaming celebrated their vintage country and rock influences\, Easy Way reveals a songwriting style that has changed\, evolved\, and gotten more modern. Dan Auerbach\, another artist who knows from bedrock influences\, co-wrote two songs on the album. “Dan’s love for songwriting was inspiring\, just the kick in the pants we needed to start writing again after being on the road\,” says Page. \nThe brothers’ decision to produce the new album themselves no doubt led to the new sound. “We wanted the freedom to experiment with our own weird ideas\,” says Jack\, “We used to joke that the working title album should be Expensive Demos.” As they crisscrossed the nation on tour\, the brothers would stop through Alex Hall’s Reliable Recorders studio in Chicago to chase the new sound they were after. The result joins together what would otherwise be distant corners of the American songbook. Both the traditional twang of Chicago pedal steel guitarist Joel Paterson (Devil in a Woodpile\, The Western Elstons) and the primal wail of free jazz saxophonist Michael Lewis (Bon Iver\, Andrew Bird) are at home on the album. Just as they did with their debut\, the brothers found a voice all their own. \nMulti-instrumentalist Barbara Jean will open. \nBUY E-TICKETS HERE. Tickets also available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must provide proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test at the door prior to each show. Phone photos of vaccination cards will be accepted. Further precautions may be taken pending state and county health guidelines. \nDoors at 6:30pm. Music at 7:30.

Presenting poetic depth and musical thoughtfulness\, Coffman writes songs witty enough to make you laugh\, yet endearing enough to make you cry. \nIn his debut album\, Coffman paints his place as an artist worth listening to. Canvas and Color is as much about hopeful new beginnings as it is the nostalgic past.
