SUMMARY:Songwriter/Storyteller live stream series: Jacob Mahon
DESCRIPTION:Duluth singer/songwriter and New Salty Dog frontman Jacob Mahon will discuss his quirky\, off-beat Americana songwriting\, tell stories from his life in music and play songs from his latest release on the next “Live From The Heart” songwriters/storytellers live stream series. The on-line only event begins at 7:30 pm Monday\, Nov. 29 on the Sacred Heart YouTube channel. He performs regularly with his band New Salty Dog\, which released the album “Pecan\, Pecon” in 2020. \n(Photo by Aaron Reichow) \nA limited number of free studio audience tickets are available at Eventbrite.com. \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must provide proof of vaccination or a 72-hour negative COVID-19 test at the door prior to each show. SUMMARY:Mason Jennings
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota favorite Mason Jennings returns to the Sacred Heart Music Center stage as part of his first midwest tour since the 2020 pandemic shutdown. \n Performing virtual shows and only a handful of live audience events\, Jennings has spent the pandemic painting\, making visual art and releasing music in his side project band Painted Shields. This solo tour will feature songs from his most recent album “Songs From When We Met\,” old favorites and new creations. \nWhen Jennings started writing songs for his new record\, Songs From When We Met\, he was in a setting he had never written in before. “I was living out at a farm for a month and walking through some old woods on the property every day. There was a river. And each day an owl would come find me\, and then perch above me\, day or night. I saw lots of snakes. Songs just came to me there. They were coming in so fast they just about took my head off. It was unlike anything I’ve experienced before\,” recalls Jennings. In Native American animal medicine snakes symbolize rebirth\, owls symbolize seeing what others cannot and turning darkness into light. Both are themes throughout the album and the music has a clear hopeful feeling. \nIn addition to his solo work\, Mason has started a new band called Painted Shield with Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam\, Matt Chamberlain\, and Brittany Davis. Their first album called Painted Shield was released on Nov. 27\, 2020 on Loosegroove records. \nThe single “Fourth of July” from Painted Shield II was released – fittingly – on July 1 of this year. The video is available on YouTube. \n“The lyrics to this song were inspired by the stories of friends of mine who have served in the military. It touches on the recovery work needed to integrate back into civilian life after being in conflict. It also touches on the fact that most of my friends who joined the military were coming from troubled homes and were looking to find a “way out” by joining\,” wrote Jennings on his Facebook page. “This song is about bringing these inner children home to get the love they never received\, as well as sending love to the actual children affected by war around the world everyday. There is a tension represented that I hope encapsulates and reflects the human struggle\, the struggle for peace and love in the face of violence and fear.” \nJennings has written\, recorded music and toured for close to 25 years. After spending almost 18 months away from the stage\, he recently performed at the Parkway Theatre in Minneapolis. \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must provide proof of vaccination or a 72-hour negative COVID-19 test at the door prior to each show. Phone photos of vaccination cards will be accepted. Further precautions may be taken pending state and county health guidelines. \nE-tickets are available HERE. Tickets will also be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. \nDoors at 7pm. Music at 8.

SUMMARY:Storyhill
DESCRIPTION:Bozeman\, Montana-based duo Storyhill celebrates the release of its first-ever Christmas album “Bethlehem” with a performance at Sacred Heart Music Center in Duluth. \nIn three decades of writing and performing together\, Chris Cunningham and John Hermanson have never recorded a holiday album. Set for release Nov. 27\, “Bethlehem” embraces the full depth and meaning of the Advent and Christmas season. This album leans into the message of hope for a more peaceful world. \n“We wanted to make a record that added something new to the conversation about the Christmas story\, a vision that flips the narrative of this world and makes the first last\, the last first and lifts up the lowly among us\,” John says.” We wanted to explore the story of a poor refugee\, born in a manger\, because none would take him in.” \nThese themes became increasingly relevant as Storyhill touring came to an abrupt halt in March 2020 with the onset of the pandemic. \nThe sound and feel of “Bethlehem” is centered solidly around acoustic guitars and intently focused harmonies. The album will appeal to fans of Storyhill\, and hopefully become a go to Christmas folk classic\, providing an oasis of peace and calm and bringing some light into times when we need it most. \nWith Twin Ports favorite Ida Jo opening. \n* NOTICE: A proof of vaccination card or negative COVID-19 test with the last 72 hours is required to gain entry* \nThe show is scheduled for 7 pm Sunday\, Nov. 14. Tickets go on sale Oct. 1 and are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Purchase tickets HERE. Tickets will also be available at Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth and Globe News in Superior. \nDoors at 6 pm. Showtime at 7pm

SUMMARY:Erik Koskinen
DESCRIPTION:Americana singer/songwriter Erik Koskinen returns to Sacred Heart Music Center to perform songs from his latest release “Burning the Deal.”\n\n\n\n \nAmericana at its best. Minneapolis-based songwriter Erik Koskinen finally makes it to Sacred Heart in support of his most recent album “Burning the Deal.”\n\nSprouted from a blend of American folk\, country\, rock-n-roll\, and blues\, Erik Koskinen and his top-shelf band realize a sound that is distinctive and fresh while familiar and classic. SUMMARY:Cactus Blossoms
DESCRIPTION:Twin Cities brother-duo The Cactus Blossoms bring their stunning harmonies and haunting Americana back to Sacred Heart Music Center. \nBlood Harmony. Whether it’s The Beach Boys\, Bee Gees or First Aid Kit\, that sibling vocal blend is the secret sauce in some of the most spine-tingling moments in popular music. The Cactus Blossoms – Minneapolis-based brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey – offer compelling evidence that this tradition is alive and well\, with a deceptively unadorned musical approach that offers “creative turns of phrase\, gorgeous harmonies\, and an ageless sound” (NPR All Things Considered)\, not to mention spine tingles aplenty. Their 2016 debut You’re Dreaming\, a stunning and transporting collection of original songs\, earned high praise from Rolling Stone and Vice Noisey\, tour stints with Kacey Musgraves and Lucius\, and a perfectly cast performance on the third season of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Now their unlikely rise continues with new album Easy Way\, to be released on their own label Walkie Talkie Records. \nWhile many bands would have been content to stick with the winning formula of their debut\, the Blossoms refused to repeat themselves. If You’re Dreaming celebrated their vintage country and rock influences\, Easy Way reveals a songwriting style that has changed\, evolved\, and gotten more modern. Dan Auerbach\, another artist who knows from bedrock influences\, co-wrote two songs on the album. “Dan’s love for songwriting was inspiring\, just the kick in the pants we needed to start writing again after being on the road\,” says Page. \nThe brothers’ decision to produce the new album themselves no doubt led to the new sound. “We wanted the freedom to experiment with our own weird ideas\,” says Jack\, “We used to joke that the working title album should be Expensive Demos.” As they crisscrossed the nation on tour\, the brothers would stop through Alex Hall’s Reliable Recorders studio in Chicago to chase the new sound they were after. The result joins together what would otherwise be distant corners of the American songbook. Both the traditional twang of Chicago pedal steel guitarist Joel Paterson (Devil in a Woodpile\, The Western Elstons) and the primal wail of free jazz saxophonist Michael Lewis (Bon Iver\, Andrew Bird) are at home on the album. Just as they did with their debut\, the brothers found a voice all their own. \nMulti-instrumentalist Barbara Jean will open. \nBUY E-TICKETS HERE. Tickets also available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must provide proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test at the door prior to each show. Presenting poetic depth and musical thoughtfulness\, Coffman writes songs witty enough to make you laugh\, yet endearing enough to make you cry. \nIn his debut album\, Coffman paints his place as an artist worth listening to. Canvas and Color is as much about hopeful new beginnings as it is the nostalgic past. SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED - Breanne Marie & the Front Porch Sinners (live stream)
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled to February 20\, 2021. \nBreanne Marie & the Front Porch Sinners will perform a live stream concert at 7 pm Saturday Feb. 20 on the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage.\n \nTo watch\, tune in to the Sacred Heart YouTube Channel: YouTube.com/Sacredheartmusiccenterduluth \nBreanne Marie broke into the Minnesota music scene as a solo performer with an acoustic guitar and a repertoire of country covers and originals. Her 2013 debut album “Six Strings of Peace and Sanity” was a collection of sweet and deeply personal songs she wrote following her father’s suicide and her brother’s death in a car accident. The success of the album set the stage for the formation of her full-blown backing band The Front Porch Sinners. \nThe group came together for Breanne Marie’s sophomore effort. The “Timothy John” EP was a journey of pain and healing\, dedicated to her brother. In 2017\, building on Breanne Marie’s sentimental storytelling style\, the band released “Wildflowers & Tumbleweeds.” The 12 tracks range from ballads and lullabies to foot-stompers sure to shake things up at any roadhouse and rattle the stakes of festival tents across the heartland. With no time to waste\, the band was back in the studio the following year in Nashville to record “Salt in the Snow”. This 5 track EP with upbeat tunes like “North Moon” and the title track will help you survive\, and thrive in\, a long Minnesota winter. \nThe Front Porch Sinners consists of Evan Tepler on guitar; Johnny Peterson on pedal steel and mandolin; Kyle Gondik-Anderson on bass; John LaMar on drums; and Kailyn Spencer on fiddle. The group plays “Great Lakes country music” which is an alt-country sound using classic country instruments mixed with lyrics that speak to the hard times and natural beauty of rust belt communities like Duluth\, MN.\nThe band is back in the studio in 2020 to record a full length album titled “Juniper”. The new music is Breanne’s most introspective songwriting yet. She worked with Twin Cities based Vicky Emerson for pre-production and will work with Rich Mattson of Sparta Sound for Engineering. Guest musicians Matt Leibfried and Matt Sjelin will bring trumpet and piano to the kaleidoscope of sounds. Expected release Summer 2020.

SUMMARY:Charlie Parr (live stream)
DESCRIPTION:Resonator fueled folk songs from Duluth Minnesota.\n \nLive streamed from the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage on its Youtube channel: Youtube.com/sacredheartmusiccenterduluth\n \nAn easily confused and very shy individual\, Charlie Parr has been traveling around singing his songs ever since leaving Austin\, Minnesota in the 1980’s in search of Spider John Koerner\, whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar one Sunday night. The experience changed his life\, made him more or less unemployable\, and brings us to now: 13 recordings\, 250 shows a year or more\, 200\,000 miles on a well broke in Kia\, and a nasty fear of heights.\n \nCelebrate the holidays with Charlie!

SUMMARY:A Felgemaker Christmas: A Virtual Organ Concert at Duluth’s Sacred Heart Music Center
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Felgemaker invite music lovers to watch a virtual concert featuring seven organists performing classic Christmas music on the historic Felgemaker pipe organ at Sacred Heart Music Center. \n\n“A Felgemaker Christmas: A Virtual Organ Concert at Duluth’s Sacred Heart Music Center” will debut on the Sacred Heart Music Center YouTube channel at 2:30 pm Sunday\, Nov. 29. In an effort to remain\nvibrant\, Sacred Heart Music Center installed high-speed cable to improve its capacity for live streaming and other video recording projects. It also established a new YouTube channel to facilitate the\ndistribution of live and recorded performances. “A Felgemaker Christmas” was recorded and edited in October for presentation at this time. \nDonations to support the maintenance of Sacred Heart’s Felgemaker organ are gratefully accepted and appreciated. You may give online at https://www.givemn.org/story/Pipeorganfund OR send a check to Sacred Heart Music Center\, 201 West 4th St.\, Duluth\, MN 55806. Please indicate ‘Felgemaker Pipe Organ’ in the memo line. \nFor more information\, please contact Velda Bell at veldagb@hotmail.com.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED – The Lowest Pair
DESCRIPTION:Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee are two kindred spirits who first met on the banks of the Mississippi while touring the Midwest festival circuit. \nAfter performing in a wide variety of projects on their own\, including string bands\, rambling folk band and anarchic punk bands\, the two formed their own banjo duo. Now\, as The Lowest Pair\, they have recorded and released five albums together\, relentlessly toured North America\, and ventured to the UK twice\, playing over 500 live shows over the past five years. \nAfter each releasing solo albums via Conor Oberst’s Team Love Records in 2018\, Winter and Lee began working on The Lowest Pair’s forthcoming 10- song set\, “The Perfect Plan.” \nThe new record features everything from simple folk to spirited Americana and beyond. Clawhammer banjo and acoustic guitar still hold the heart of The Lowest Pair\, but the fleshed-out sound of “The Perfect Plan” leans gently into Winter’s punk past\, as well as the sonic playground of her mind\, to set the band down a new path on their musical journey.
