SUMMARY:Cactus Blossoms
DESCRIPTION:Twin Cities brother-duo The Cactus Blossoms bring their stunning harmonies and haunting Americana back to Sacred Heart Music Center. \nBlood Harmony. Whether it’s The Beach Boys\, Bee Gees or First Aid Kit\, that sibling vocal blend is the secret sauce in some of the most spine-tingling moments in popular music. The Cactus Blossoms – Minneapolis-based brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey – offer compelling evidence that this tradition is alive and well\, with a deceptively unadorned musical approach that offers “creative turns of phrase\, gorgeous harmonies\, and an ageless sound” (NPR All Things Considered)\, not to mention spine tingles aplenty. Their 2016 debut You’re Dreaming\, a stunning and transporting collection of original songs\, earned high praise from Rolling Stone and Vice Noisey\, tour stints with Kacey Musgraves and Lucius\, and a perfectly cast performance on the third season of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Now their unlikely rise continues with new album Easy Way\, to be released on their own label Walkie Talkie Records. \nWhile many bands would have been content to stick with the winning formula of their debut\, the Blossoms refused to repeat themselves. If You’re Dreaming celebrated their vintage country and rock influences\, Easy Way reveals a songwriting style that has changed\, evolved\, and gotten more modern. Dan Auerbach\, another artist who knows from bedrock influences\, co-wrote two songs on the album. “Dan’s love for songwriting was inspiring\, just the kick in the pants we needed to start writing again after being on the road\,” says Page. \nThe brothers’ decision to produce the new album themselves no doubt led to the new sound. “We wanted the freedom to experiment with our own weird ideas\,” says Jack\, “We used to joke that the working title album should be Expensive Demos.” As they crisscrossed the nation on tour\, the brothers would stop through Alex Hall’s Reliable Recorders studio in Chicago to chase the new sound they were after. The result joins together what would otherwise be distant corners of the American songbook. Both the traditional twang of Chicago pedal steel guitarist Joel Paterson (Devil in a Woodpile\, The Western Elstons) and the primal wail of free jazz saxophonist Michael Lewis (Bon Iver\, Andrew Bird) are at home on the album. Just as they did with their debut\, the brothers found a voice all their own. \nMulti-instrumentalist Barbara Jean will open. \nBUY E-TICKETS HERE. Tickets also available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must provide proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test at the door prior to each show. Phone photos of vaccination cards will be accepted. Further precautions may be taken pending state and county health guidelines. \nDoors at 6:30pm. Music at 7:30.

SUMMARY:Songwriter/Storyteller Live Stream Series: Cory Coffman
DESCRIPTION:Duluth singer/songwriter Cory Coffman will discuss his songwriting style\, tell some stories from his life in the music business and play songs from his new solo album on the next “Live From The Heart” songwriters/storytellers live stream series Aug. 29. KUMD radio announcer Malachy Koons will host. \nBlending a bohemian-punk ethos with an indie-folk sound\, Duluth songwriter Cory Coffman melds his inviting voice with a musical eclecticism\, giving his songs popular appeal. Presenting poetic depth and musical thoughtfulness\, Coffman writes songs witty enough to make you laugh\, yet endearing enough to make you cry. \nIn his debut album\, Coffman paints his place as an artist worth listening to. Canvas and Color is as much about hopeful new beginnings as it is the nostalgic past. With heartwarming lyrics and subtle satire\, Coffman pairs simple chord progressions with sweet melodies that speak to the innocence in us all. \nCoffman has established himself as a prominent figure in the music scene of Duluth\, Minnesota. His work as a freelance drummer and percussionist over the past decade has curated a diverse performance background. This variety of musical experiences can be heard in songs that feature a wide range of genres and a strong sense of rhythm.  \nCory Coffman is a standout musician who comforts his audience with his optimistic demeanor and affable nature. Blending a bohemian-punk ethos with an indie-pop sound\, Cory Coffman melds his inviting voice with a musical eclecticism\, giving his songs popular appeal. Presenting poetic depth and musical thoughtfulness\, Coffman is witty enough to laugh with\, yet endearing enough to cry to.

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED - Breanne Marie & the Front Porch Sinners (live stream)
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled to February 20\, 2021. \nBreanne Marie & the Front Porch Sinners will perform a live stream concert at 7 pm Saturday Feb. 20 on the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage.\n \nTo watch\, tune in to the Sacred Heart YouTube Channel: YouTube.com/Sacredheartmusiccenterduluth \nBreanne Marie broke into the Minnesota music scene as a solo performer with an acoustic guitar and a repertoire of country covers and originals. Her 2013 debut album “Six Strings of Peace and Sanity” was a collection of sweet and deeply personal songs she wrote following her father’s suicide and her brother’s death in a car accident. The success of the album set the stage for the formation of her full-blown backing band The Front Porch Sinners. \nThe group came together for Breanne Marie’s sophomore effort. The “Timothy John” EP was a journey of pain and healing\, dedicated to her brother. In 2017\, building on Breanne Marie’s sentimental storytelling style\, the band released “Wildflowers & Tumbleweeds.” The 12 tracks range from ballads and lullabies to foot-stompers sure to shake things up at any roadhouse and rattle the stakes of festival tents across the heartland. With no time to waste\, the band was back in the studio the following year in Nashville to record “Salt in the Snow”. This 5 track EP with upbeat tunes like “North Moon” and the title track will help you survive\, and thrive in\, a long Minnesota winter. \nThe Front Porch Sinners consists of Evan Tepler on guitar; Johnny Peterson on pedal steel and mandolin; Kyle Gondik-Anderson on bass; John LaMar on drums; and Kailyn Spencer on fiddle. The group plays “Great Lakes country music” which is an alt-country sound using classic country instruments mixed with lyrics that speak to the hard times and natural beauty of rust belt communities like Duluth\, MN.\nThe band is back in the studio in 2020 to record a full length album titled “Juniper”. The new music is Breanne’s most introspective songwriting yet. She worked with Twin Cities based Vicky Emerson for pre-production and will work with Rich Mattson of Sparta Sound for Engineering. Guest musicians Matt Leibfried and Matt Sjelin will bring trumpet and piano to the kaleidoscope of sounds. Expected release Summer 2020.

SUMMARY:Charlie Parr (live stream)
DESCRIPTION:Resonator fueled folk songs from Duluth Minnesota.\n \nLive streamed from the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage on its Youtube channel: Youtube.com/sacredheartmusiccenterduluth\n \nAn easily confused and very shy individual\, Charlie Parr has been traveling around singing his songs ever since leaving Austin\, Minnesota in the 1980’s in search of Spider John Koerner\, whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar one Sunday night. The experience changed his life\, made him more or less unemployable\, and brings us to now: 13 recordings\, 250 shows a year or more\, 200\,000 miles on a well broke in Kia\, and a nasty fear of heights.\n \nCelebrate the holidays with Charlie!

SUMMARY:CANCELLED – The Lowest Pair
DESCRIPTION:Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee are two kindred spirits who first met on the banks of the Mississippi while touring the Midwest festival circuit. \nAfter performing in a wide variety of projects on their own\, including string bands\, rambling folk band and anarchic punk bands\, the two formed their own banjo duo. Now\, as The Lowest Pair\, they have recorded and released five albums together\, relentlessly toured North America\, and ventured to the UK twice\, playing over 500 live shows over the past five years. \nAfter each releasing solo albums via Conor Oberst’s Team Love Records in 2018\, Winter and Lee began working on The Lowest Pair’s forthcoming 10- song set\, “The Perfect Plan.” \nThe new record features everything from simple folk to spirited Americana and beyond. Clawhammer banjo and acoustic guitar still hold the heart of The Lowest Pair\, but the fleshed-out sound of “The Perfect Plan” leans gently into Winter’s punk past\, as well as the sonic playground of her mind\, to set the band down a new path on their musical journey.

SUMMARY:Duluth Does Clapton: A tribute to the music of Eric Clapton
DESCRIPTION:More than 50 years ago graffiti started to pop up around London that said: “Clapton is God.” \nGod of the guitar\, that is. \nOn Saturday\, January 25th\, local Duluth and Superior musicians will pay tribute to guitar god Eric Clapton in a former catholic cathedral. \nEric Clapton’s music career has spanned more than five decades performing with The Yardbirds and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers before forming his own bands Cream\, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos\, which recorded the classic “Layla” in 1970. A string of solo albums followed which generated hits throughout the 70s and 80s including songs like “I Shot the Sheriff\,” “Wonderful Tonight\,” “Cocaine\,” “She’s Waiting” and “Tears in Heaven” in 1991. \nAs part of its ongoing tribute series\, Duluth Does Eric Clapton will celebrate the work of this influential and highly acclaimed artist with a night featuring his music at Sacred Heart Music Center. The set list will feature Twin Ports musicians each interpreting an Eric Clapton song in their own personal style. \nDon’t miss this one-night-only performance. Get your tickets in advance at Electric Fetus Duluth\, Globe News Superior or Eventbrite.com. \nTickets: $10 in advance\, $15 at the door.

SUMMARY:Mason Jennings
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter Mason Jennings returns to Sacred Heart music Center in support of his latest release: “Songs From When We Met.” \n“Songs From When We Met” was written during a recent month-long farm retreat where time was spent walking through the woods and passing a nearby river. Jennings was inspired by wildlife – the owls and snakes he visited daily. \n“Songs were coming in so fast they just about took my head off. It was unlike anything I’ve experienced before\,” recalls Jennings. \nIn Native American animal medicine\, snakes symbolize rebirth and owls symbolize seeing what others cannot and turning darkness into light. Both are themes throughout the album and the music has a clear hopeful feeling. \n“The last record was made in a real dark time for me. I was battling a lot of dark energy. Since then I’ve healed a lot and a lot of changes have taken place\,” said Jennings. “It’s been a rough patch but thankfully this record is about healing and hope. I fell in love and got married so it is mostly about love.” \nTickets are $20 in advance and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday\, Dec. 13 on Eventbrite.com. TIckets will also be available at Electric Fetus in Duluth and Globe News in Superior.

SUMMARY:Frankie Lee
DESCRIPTION:Twin Cities-based singer-songwriter Frankie Lee made his latest record ‘Stillwater’ in his mom’s house in the Dutchtown neighborhood of Stillwater.\nRecorded in three days during the summer of 2018\, and it has since been buzzing about the globe after being released in May of this year. \nThe full album will be performed live with 8mm films from the late 40s early 50s originally made by storied photographer John Runk\, a Stillwater native famous for his extensive collection of historic images depicting the lumber era of this region. At the time of his death in 1968\, Runk was actively editing a film about Stillwater that was never finished… \nIn 2007 though\, these films (more than 14 hours) were discovered in a Stillwater attic\, digitally transferred\, and became “An Ode to Stillwater: The 8mm Films of John Runk” made by Paul Creager that has aired on local public TV periodically ever since. \nIn early 2019\, after Frankie completed mixing his album\, he inquired about whether the Runk films could be paired with his soon-to-be- released album. With generous permission by the Washington County Historical Society\, access was granted. Paul and Frankie collaborated on two music videos that were released this spring\, receiving coverage in Rolling Stone\, Mojo and the full album with film accompaniment streams online. \nJoin us at Sacred Heart for a performance of the entire album with film\, and the first screening in Duluth. \nDuluth-based singer-songwriter Sarah Krueger will open. \nDoors at 6 pm. Show at 7 pm \nAdvance tickets are $15 and will be available at Eventbrite.com\, The Electric Fetus Duluth and Globe News in Superior beginning at 10 am Friday\, Oct. 11.
