SUMMARY:Cactus Blossoms
DESCRIPTION:Blood Harmony. Whether it’s The Beach Boys\, Bee Gees or First Aid Kit\, that sibling vocal blend is the secret sauce in some of the most spine-tingling moments in popular music. The Cactus Blossoms – Minneapolis-based brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey – offer compelling evidence that this tradition is alive and well\, with a deceptively unadorned musical approach that offers “creative turns of phrase\, gorgeous harmonies\, and an ageless sound” (NPR All Things Considered)\, not to mention spine tingles aplenty. Their 2016 debut You’re Dreaming\, a stunning and transporting collection of original songs\, earned high praise from Rolling Stone and Vice Noisey\, tour stints with Kacey Musgraves and Lucius\, and a perfectly cast performance on the third season of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Now their unlikely rise continues with new album Easy Way\, to be released on their own label Walkie Talkie Records. \nOpening the show will be David Huckfelt of the Pines.\nIn the fall of 2018\, Huckfelt left behind the familiar—the comfort of his home in Minneapolis; the camaraderie of his critically acclaimed band\, The Pines; the luxuries of heat\, hot water\, and electricity—and relocated to Isle Royale\, America’s most remote and least visited national park in mighty Lake Superior. Six hours by boat off the Michigan coast\, Isle Royale is the largest island in the world’s largest freshwater lake\, an isolated stretch of wilderness seemingly forgotten by the 20th century (to say nothing of the 21st). There\, as an Artist In Residence selected by the National Park Service\, Huckfelt spent ten hours a day for two straight weeks writing in solitude\, channeling the mysterious and lonesome island’s spirits into his stunning debut solo album\, ‘Stranger Angels.’ \nTickets $15

SUMMARY:The Leap Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to a 2019 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant\, The Leap Ensemble will present its “Hapsburg House Party” chamber music program at five venues throughout Minnesota in September 2019\, including Minneapolis\, St. Paul\, Duluth\, and Owatonna. \nSoprano Andrea Leap and her seven-member ensemble will perform works by Mozart\, Scarlatti\, and Handel\, as well as two pieces by two women composers from that era\, Marianna Martines and Maria Theresa Agnesi (Pittonini). \nAustria in the 1700s was the birthplace of the classical music we still love today\, but it wasn’t created in the aristocratic palaces of Vienna – it was brought to life in weekly jam sessions hosted by Marianna Martines\, a student of Haydn\, a friend to Mozart\, and a composer herself. Every Sunday musicians and composers came to her salons to inspire and compete with one another\, improvising new musical ideas and showing off their latest creations. Hapsburg House Party – an evening of musical “playtime” drawn from music composed for Viennese salons – will feature works by Martines and Pittonini\, as well as Mozart\, Scarlatti\, and Handel. \nTickets $20 / Students & Seniors $15

SUMMARY:Joan Osborne sings the songs of Bob Dylan
DESCRIPTION:Joan Osborne unleashes her sizable gifts as a vocalist and interpreter of Duluth-born Bob Dylan’s celebrated canon with a performance just blocks from his boyhood home on the eve of the Bard’s 78th birthday. \nThe seven-time Grammy-nominated\, multi-platinum-selling singer and songwriter\, whom The New York Times has called “a fiercely intelligent\, no-nonsense singer\,” winds her supple\, soulful voice around Dylan’s poetic\, evocative lyrics\, etching gleaming new facets in them along the way. \n“I try not to do a straight-up imitation of what someone else has done\,” Osborne says. “Like if you’re going to sing an Otis Redding song\, you’re never going to out-Otis him so you shouldn’t even try. So I always try to find some unique way into the song\, and also to pick songs where the intersection between the song and my voice hits some kind of sweet spot. It was a joy being able to sing these brilliant lyrics. It’s like an actor being given a great part. You are just so excited to say these lines because they’re so powerful that it lifts you up above yourself.” \nOsborne recorded and released “Songs of Bob Dylan” in 2017 and has been touring the album around the world. \nThe album spans Dylan’s beloved standards from the ’60s and ’70s (“Masters of War\,” “Highway 61 Revisited\,” “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35\,” “Buckets of Rain\,” “Tangled Up In Blue”) to some of Osborne’s favorites from his later albums\, including “Dark Eyes” (from 1985’s Empire Burlesque)\, “Ring Them Bells” (from 1989’s Oh Mercy)\, “Tryin’ To Get To Heaven” (from 1997’s Time Out of Mind)\, and “High Water” (from 2001’s Love and Theft). “His versions are legendary and I’m not trying to improve on them\,” Osborne says. “I’m just trying to sing beautiful songs and let people hear them. It’s about trying to give a different shade of meaning to something that’s already great. I happen to think Dylan is a great singer\, but I will never\, in a million years\, sound like him\, which almost made it easier.” \nThe Kentucky native famously got her start performing her own songs in New York City’s downtown rock clubs\, around the time that she began to rediscover Dylan’s work with “Oh Mercy.” “When you’re playing in the nightclub scene in Greenwich Village\, his trail is everywhere\, and not just because he played in the same places\, but because people still perform his music every night.” \nOsborne eventually scored multi-platinum success with her 1995 album “Relish\,” featuring the Top 10 hit “One of Us.” \nIn 2003\, Osborne joined the surviving members of The Grateful Dead and had the chance to sing with Dylan\, their co-headliner. “We performed “Tears of Rage\,” a song Dylan co-wrote with Richard Manuel\,” Osborne says. “He came up to me after the show and said\, ‘You know\, I never liked that second verse\, but I rewrote it. What do you think of these lyrics?’ And he read me the alternate lyrics that he’d apparently just written on this scrap of paper. I was so flabbergasted that Bob Dylan is standing there\, we’re both sweaty from performing on this hot summer day in Indiana\, and he’s asking me what I think of his lyric changes for this classic song. And all I could do was just say\, ‘Oh yeah\, that sounds good. I can hear that.” \nDuluth-based acoustic folk trio Coyote will open the evening at Sacred Heart Music Center. The event is part of the Duluth DylanFest\, an annual week-long celebration of Bob Dylan’s May 24\, 1941 birth in Duluth\, Minnesota.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Charlie Parr & Phil Cook
DESCRIPTION:Easily confused and very shy\, Charlie Parr has been traveling around performing his Resonator-fueled folk songs ever since leaving Austin\, Minnesota in the 1980s in search of Spider John Koerner–whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar. The experience changed his life\, made him more or less unemployable\, and transformed him into the force of nature known to fans today. Those who have been following Charlie Parr through his escapades of nonstop touring already know that the Duluth-based songwriter has a way of carving a path straight to the gut. On his newest record\, Dog\, he digs deeper and hits those nerves quicker than ever before. In quieter moments\, Parr confronts hard issues head-on\, using only an acoustic guitar or banjo to light the way\, then ramps up to raucous\, punk-tinged soundscapes that make you want to howl at the moon. \nJoining Charlie on stage will be Wisconsin-born multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook. Now based in Durham\, North Carolina\, Cook is a member Hiss Golden Messenger and The Shouting Matches\, and is a frequent collaborator of Justin Vernon\, The Blind Boys of Alabama\, The Indigo Girls\, Bruce Hornsby and more. Cook recently released the album “People are My Drug” with is band the Guitarheels. \nPeople Are My Drug is a radical album\, in every sense of the word. In 2018 choosing community and positivity and music is radical. Cook’s smile is still as infectious and ernest as it’s ever been. However\, he presently appears charged with a newly-minted seriousness that is revealed to listeners in solidarity\, that he too is fighting like hell to keep love alive. \nTickets are $18 in advance at Eventbrite.com\, Electric Fetus Duluth and Globe News in Superior. $20 at the door. \nDoors are at 7 pm. Music starts at 8 pm.
