SUMMARY:Mason Jennings "Underneath the Roses" album release show
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota troubadour Mason Jennings celebrates the release of his 16th studio album Underneath the Roses with an altar stage performance at 8pm on Saturday Nov. 25 at Sacred Heart Music Center. \nJennings writes that the songs from Underneath The Roses were written in a burst following the birth of his son\, Western\, in March 2022. \n“I hadn’t written any songs in about a year. I had been dealing with the psychological after effects of the pandemic as well as the loss of my dad. So\, when Western was born I didn’t expect to be writing much. But immediately he was responding to music in a very intense way.” \n Between May and November 2022\, Jennings wrote 48 songs! \n“They certainly uplifted me and connected me with the creative spirit\, and spirit in general\, again. They cover all kinds of ground but\, when I listen back\, I think the central theme is overcoming fear with love\,” he said. \nStone Gossard (Pearl Jam) and Regan Hagar (Brad) from Loosegroove Records helped edit the track list down to 11 and put the songs to tape. \n“I called it Underneath The Roses because I feel like these songs are musical roses and when I look below them there are many thorns and so much dirt and soil. All of it was needed for them to come into existence and bloom\,” said Mason. \nMinnesota-based singer-songwriter Molly Dean will open. \nAdvance E-Tickets are available now for $20 on Eventbrite.com HERE.  Advance paper tickets will also be available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while they last. \n

SUMMARY:Mr. Sun
DESCRIPTION:Mr Sun comprises some of the most original musicians to apply themselves to the American String Band. \nLegendary fiddler Darol Anger is at home in a number of musical genres\, some of which he helped to invent\, and is a member of the original “nuclear” generation of pickers who extended Bluegrass\, Jazz\, and Classical music to find their common ground; Mr Sun is the latest iteration in that legacy. \nDuluth native Joe K. Walsh is one of the foremost contemporary mandolinists\, with four award-winning years in the Gibson Brothers\, three solo recordings\, and a Berklee professorship. \nGrant Gordy is a standout in the crowded field of Acoustic Guitar Wunderkinds. Grant’s work was quickly recognized for its kaleidoscopic excellence and startling emotion\, fusing Jazz\, R&B\, and Bluegrass concepts to an unprecedented degree. \nThe group recently added the masterful bassist Aidan O’Donnell\, a Brooklyn\, New York (by way of Scotland) jazz veteran. \nThe four musical personalities of Mr Sun are so strong that one might imagine the group could explode if not for the palpable love and humor that emanate from every note they play together. The group means to take a relaxed approach to writing its own chapter in the American Music Saga with their new Compass Records release “extrovert”\, on CD & bright yellow vinyl. \nAdvance e-tickets are available HERE for $20. Advance paper tickets are available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 while supplies last. Doors at 6 pm. Music at 7.

SUMMARY:Turn Turn Turn
DESCRIPTION:THIS DHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nMinneapolis-based folk rock trio Turn Turn Turn performs an acoustic concert live on the Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage. Attend in person or watch on livestream! \nTurn Turn Turn is a trio who bonded over their mutual love of close harmony 60s and 70s country\, folk\, and pop music and formed an original Americana band. SUMMARY:Friends of the Felgemaker: Early music concert
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of the Felgemaker as early music specialist Shelley Gruskin leads a host of other wonderful instrumentalists and singers to perform “Lovers Made Men” in concert form. \n“Lovers Made Men” is a Jacobean era masque written by Ben Jonson with music composed by Nicholas Lanier. Written as a form of courtly entertainment\, masques flourished in 16th century and early 17th century Europe. “Lovers Made Men” was particularly significant in the development and acceptance of opera in 17th century England. \nAdditional repertoire includes a recorder concerto by Anton Heberle and Spanish Renaissance pieces played on the Felgemaker pipe organ. As part of the concert\, Gruskin will demonstrate a variety of early instruments in relation to organ stops\, such as the gemshorn\, conical and cylindrical recorders\, krummhorn\, and raushpfeife. \nShelley Gruskin is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and was flutist with the NBC Opera Company until turning his attention to early music and early instruments. He was a member of the New York Pro Musica\, a pioneer ensemble in the performance of Medieval and Renaissance music. In 1978\, he initiated the country’s first undergraduate degree in early music performance at the College of St. Scholastica. He has been listed as one of 10 most influential recorder players of the modern revival. \nThe concert is free with a $20 suggested donation. Please RSVP HERE on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Billy McLaughlin/Michael Gulezian
DESCRIPTION:Finger-style acoustic guitarists Billy McLaughlin and Michael Gulezian will share the Sacred Heart stage for this rare\, one-night-only\, double-bill at 7:30 pm Thursday\, April 13. \nFor decades\, Billy McLaughlin astounded audiences around the world with his complex and rhythmic acoustic guitar music. \nAt the height of his international recording and touring career\, Billy was diagnosed with Focal Dystonia\, a mysterious and yet-to-be-cured neuromuscular disorder that rendered him unable to play. But Billy did the unthinkable: He learned to play his complex music with the opposite hand. Now a Minnesota music treasure\, McLaughlin continues to create his own original work and shine a light on the classics. \nMichael Gulezian is one of the most highly acclaimed solo acoustic instrumental guitarists of our time. He’s a phenomenal technical guitarist with the rare ability to transcend his own virtuosity\, creating music that touches and moves people at the deepest level. He is often compared to musicians such as Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges – guitarists who amaze us with what ten fingers and one guitar can do. \nE-Tickets are available for $25 HERE. Paper tickets are available at Globe News in Superior and Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth. Tickets will be available at the door for $30 while supply lasts. Doors at 6:30pm. Music at 7:30.
