DESCRIPTION:Singer songwriter Skarlett Woods will perform her latest work and talk about her life in music during our next “Live from The Heart” Songwriters/Storytellers live stream at 7:30 pm Tuesday\, March 21 on the Sacred Heart YouTube channel. \nKaren Sunderman will host. \nKnown to mix mesmerizing vocal work with a 7-string guitar groove far beyond your average singer/songwriter\, Skarlett Woods brings her unique folk and West Coast jazz to the same dinner table.  \nWood blends swing and jazz into folk-themed stories of love and has a stage presence that demands the attention of a room. Taking her listeners on up-beat rhythmic rides over heart- swelling arrangements of originals and covers\, Skarlett has simply become more comfortable  showing herself in the lights. She is currently gearing up to release her second album in the Fall of 2023. \nFunding provided by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. \nA limited number of FREE studio audience tickets are available HERE. WE WILL RESCHEDULE AT A LATER DATE. \nTwin Cities reggae legends Dred I Dread\, Minneapolis alternative rockers The Orange Goodness and Duluth jazz-funk favorite AfroGeode & The Gemstones will all perform full sets as part of the Minnesota Music Coalition 2023 Caravan Du Nord. \nDred I Dread was formed in 1998 and chosen as “Best Local Reggae Band” by City Pages Magazine in 1999. The Band features talented musicians that come from Jamaica\, New Orleans\, Minnesota\, and Turkiye. The debut album “Listen to the Revolution” was released in March 1999. The album was produced by Tony “Asher” Brisset\, one of the founding members of Black Uhuru. The band has released four full-length albums and recently release the EP “Mount Zion.” \nThe Orange Goodness is an exciting groove-infused alt/indie rock group that creates out of Minneapolis\, Minnesota and features Mike Michel (guitars\,vocals) Ian Allison (bass) and Reese Kling (drums). In the fall of 2021\, their debut EP\, “Flying Under The Radar Of Chaos\,” was released and was partially funded by a devout patron base via a successful Go Fund Me Campaign.  \nAfroGeode & The Gemstones features Duluth soul queen AfroGeode fronting a five-piece jazz-funk band. DESCRIPTION:Duluth lost a true friend and artist when Mimi Parker of Low died after a challenging battle with ovarian cancer Nov. 5. Her spirit remains with us in the form of the music she left behind\, one special gift being the band’s beloved Christmas album recorded in 1999. \nThe Duluth music community will gather together and remember Mimi with a special holiday event loving called “A Very Mimi Christmas” from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday\, Dec. 21 at Sacred Heart Music Center. The event will also be live streamed on the Sacred Heart YouTube channel. \n“We wanted to do something to celebrate Mim that would bring people together in the spirit of\nthe season\,” said long-time friend\, Scott Lunt. “Listening to Low’s Christmas album together at\nSacred Heart seemed like the obvious thing to do.” \nThe event will feature a cookie potluck—a nod to Parker’s love of baking\, says Lunt—and a craft table where people can decorate a commemorative tree ornament. “She loved to make stuff\,” he said. “We wanted to include an element in the evening to honor her maker’s spirit.” \nFriends and fans are invited to come\, listen to Low’s Christmas album\, bring a dozen (or two!) cookies to add to the cookie potluck\, decorate a commemorative ornament\, and share some Christmas cheer as we remember our dear Mim in the season she loved so much. \nA suggested donation of $10 will go to benefit Churches United in Ministry\n(CHUM)\, a Duluth organization whose programs serve more than 8\,000 low-income\, homeless\, hungry\, isolated\, or otherwise marginalized community members each year.

DESCRIPTION:Legendary musician and songwriter Paul Metsa will perform songs and talk about his new book “Alphabet Jazz” in our next “Live from The Heart: Songwriters/Storytellers” live stream series only on the Sacred Heart Music Center YouTube channel. \nMaija Jenson will host. \nMetsa was born on the Minnesota Iron Range\, was based in Minneapolis for decades and now lives in Duluth where he performs regularly. He has received seven Minnesota Music Awards and has played more than 5\,000 gigs\, including forays to Iceland and Siberia. \nHis book\, “Alphabet Jazz\,” is a collection of poetry\, prose\, stories\, and songs that Metsa wrote between 1984 and 2022. He describes the work as “a personal diary of sorts – midnight blasts of inspiration\, love letters in poem\, personal tributes to musicians and friends who have passed on\, true stories\, letters and songs I have written along the way that I still perform.” \nA limited number of FREE studio audience tickets are available HERE. DESCRIPTION:Turn Turn Turn is a trio who bonded over their mutual love of close harmony 60s and 70s country\, folk\, and pop music and formed an original Americana band. To create their distinctive sound\, the band “turns” to the distant past of early American recorded music\, “turns” again to that renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s\, and finally “turns” again to the present looking forward.  \nMembers Adam Levy (guitar\, vocals)\, Savannah Smith (guitar\, vocals) and Barb Brynstad (bass\, vocals) are all mainstays of the Minnesota music scene and together craft an infectious\, pop-infused Americana. \nLevy is a veteran of the Minnesota rock scene\, best known for leading up alt-rock band The Honeydogs. As a prolific songwriter and producer\, he has worked across many genres and performed around the world.  \nSmith needs only needs 30 seconds to win you over with vocal prowess\, and absolute mastery of crafting raw and gritty emotion into beautiful melodies. She has worked with such acts as Trampled by Turtles\, William Elliot Whitmore and Laura Stevenson. \nBrynstad is an in-demand musician with decades-long roots in the Twin Cities music community. As a singer\, bassist and guitarist\, she has performed with a variety of musicians\, including Chastity Brown (folk/Americana)\, Tina Schlieske (pop/rock)\, Willie Wisely (pop/rock)\, and the late great Willie Murphy (blues/soul). \nEven though Turn Turn Turn was born as a cover band\, the group’s original material – sweetheart alt-country folk-pop with a smattering of soulful strut – quickly stole the spotlight. DESCRIPTION:One of Scandinavia’s favorite dance bands\, Dalakopa\, a folk music super group based in Roros\, Norway\, will perform at the Sacred Heart Music Center on Tuesday\, Sept. 27 at 7pm. You will not be able to just sit and listen! \nDalakopa have been together for over 30 years and have incorporated various members during this time. They are an international mix of musicians from Norway\, Sweden\, Denmark and the U.S. \nExperimental Scandinavian-inspired folk band Pony\, based in Minneapolis\, will open. \nDalakopa has toured throughout Europe and the U.S.\, won numerous awards including Spelmannsprisen\, the Norwegian Grammy and recorded 12 albums. In 2018 the group was included in the Norwegian Old Time Dancing Hall of Fame. \nMany of the tunes are traditional while others are composed by the various members of the group in traditional style. The dance styles are the Pols from Norway\, Polska from Sweden\, Halling\, Schottish\, Waltz\, Polka and Mazurka. Their arrangements can be very imaginative with the sound of waves in the background\, occasional use of snare drums\, and on some occasions genre bending incorporating reggae rhythms. \nThe leader of the group is Bengt Jacobsen. Bengt plays several instruments: the accordion\, organ\, piano and fiddle. Mary Barthelemy\, who at one time lived in Silver Bay\, plays the flute for the group\, giving it a unique sound. The others are Oline Sofie Bakkum Hardelin on fiddle; Thore Härdelin\, fiddle and  vokalist; Torill Aasegg\, fiddle og  nyckelharpe ; Jens Nygård\, fiddle; Stein Nygård\, accordion; Roar Kjeldsberg\, bass; and Ole Anders Feragen\,  gitar. Guests have included Lillebror Vesaasen on the accordion; Ronja Jacobsen on the Zitter and Gro Kjellberg Solli\, vocals. \nThe tour was initiated by Folklore Village in Dodgeville\, Wisconsin\, with financial support from the American Scandinavian Foundation. SUMMARY:Kardemimmit
DESCRIPTION:Kardemimmit is a band of four awesome women playing the Finnish national instrument\, kantele.  \nKardemimmit is in charge of their own music – they compose\, as well as arrange\, write lyrics and produce. Maija Pokela\, Jutta Rahmel\, Anna Wegelius and Leeni Wegelius founded the group in 1999 at the musical institute Juvenalia in the band members’ home town Espoo\, Finland. \nAlongside 15 and 38 stringed kanteles\, singing has a big part in Kardemimmit’s musical universe where original pieces with a modern approach still have a strong foundation in Finnish\, Eastern European and Scandinavian traditions. The Finnish reki-singing style\, 19th century dancing music and Perhonjokilaakso kantele playing style\, Eastern Finnish archaic improvisation and ancient runo singing are all present in Kardemimmit’s music. \nAs a kantele band Kardemimmit is a pioneer: In 2004 Kardemimmit was nominated the Band of the Year by Kantele Association and the next year they won the International Kantele Competition. \nThe group has recorded five albums and tours throughout Europe\, North America and Japan. \nYou might wonder what the band’s name means. It’s a play of words. Kardemumma is a spice that Finnish people use a lot in their sweet baking. Mimmit is a word for girls that have bold nature. That means Kardemimmit is actually the Finnish Ethno Spice Girls. \nAdvance e-tickets available HERE beginning at 10 a.m. Friday. Aug. 12 for $20. DESCRIPTION:Duluth composer Wendy Durrwachter presents “The Two Trees: A Yeats Song Cycle” on the beautiful Sacred Heart Music Center altar stage at 7:30pm Thursday\, June 9. \n“The Two Trees: A Yeats Song Cycle” will present music from the album composed by Durrwachter and performed by Durrwachter and Adam Sippola in 2019. \nThe concert will feature Durrwachter on piano\, tenor Adam Sippola and a string quartet of Erin Aldridge\, Marc Haroo\, Jonathan Kresha\, and Byron Klimek. Flautists Paula Gudmundson and Melanie Sever will also perform. \nDurrwachter is a composer completing an indefinite residency at the headwaters of the largest fresh water deposit on earth\, the Great Lakes.  \nDurrwachter was awarded an Arrowhead Regional Arts Council Career Development Grant in 2018 & 2019 – the latter to compose a wind quintet performed by the University of Minnesota Duluth Faculty Wind Quintet at Weber Music Hall. She was recently commissioned by the Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra to compose her first symphony\, “Chequamegon Bay.” \nIn November 2020\, Opera-Oriented Project Sponsorships in Minnesota (OOPS MN) commissioned Durrwachter to compose an aria to a chocolate chip cookie recipe with libretto developed by Pulitzer-Prize winning librettist Mark Campbell. It was performed by MN Opera soprano Tracey Engleman and pianist Jared Miller and recorded to video by HotDishAV.  \nDurrwachter studied piano 15 years with Bishop Michael Bent in Green Bay\, Wisconsin and attended summer piano academies at Indiana University\, Bloomington; and University of Wisconsin\, Whitewater. Durrwachter also had the privilege to study piano performance with Duncan McNab and orchestration/composition with Judith Lang Zaimont at the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities\, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in piano and composition in 2000. ​ \nNOTICE: All concert-goers must wear a mask inside Sacred Heart when not consuming food or beverages. \nAdvance e-tickets are available now for $20 on Eventbrite HERE. DESCRIPTION:Dan Israel\, Terry Walsh and Steve Brantseg lead a five-piece rock band onto the Sacred Heart altar stage to celebrate Bob Dylan’s 81st birthday as part of the annual Duluth Dylan Fest events. \nThe Minneapolis-based super group will perform a broad representation of Dylan’s rock and roll side\, leaning heavily on his ’60s golden era with material from “Highway 61 Revisited\,” “Blonde on Blonde” and “Bringing It All Back Home.” \nThe group will also include some choice cuts from Dylan’s ’70s\, ’80s\, ’90s and beyond output.
